No surprise there. I think everyone saw that one coming.

Not a bad choice. I like that he looks very young.

Not familiar with his acting, but he appears to have the wholesomeness of Tobey Maguire, but with the lankiness of Andrew Garfield.

A perfect combo, in my eyes.

Shaun, I only saw the actor in "Hugo," but he did a great job in that film.

Don't know anything about the kid, but my first thought when I saw the pic in the article Matt H. linked to was he looked like the love child of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.  In other words, perfect casting.

I like the choice of actor, I've only seen him in that
Orson Scot Card movie, Ender's Game. Is the actor tall
enough now that in costume, based on height, you
wouldn't know he's still a teen and not a full-grown
adult?

I thought that was Elijah Wood at first glance.

------------------------
He's listed as 5 ft 11, which is taller than Spider-Man.He's 18 years old, which for most people means they are done growing.

Looks like Asa Butterfield is out of the running, and the going buzz is that it may be because of comments he made on Reddit (which weren't anything terrible, but I guess he wasn't supposed to go public and peeved the studios?):

Reddit comments.

Meanwhile, Sony and Marvel are having a disagreement, reportedly, on a new choice:

Other casting prospects.

The casting of Spider-Man movies seems to be naturally divisive. Some folks think that the "real" Peter Parker should be an ordinary looking guy (Macguire). Others see him as more handsome (Garfield). I'm in the latter camp because of what is actually in the comics; John Romita Sr. and subsequent artists just portrayed him that way. Those who favor a more down to earth look are probably more inspired by the concept of a bookish, even nerdy Peter.

That definitely falls into eye of the
beholder.   I never thought Garfield
looked more handsome than McGuire.

I think "bookish" is the way I see Peter Parker (inwardly and outwardly) until he is bitten by that
spider, then there should be a change ever so slightly, that change is what
makes him more appealing to girls. Like Liz Allen and Betty Brant in JB's Chapter One who would never have given him a second look before.

It's official, Marvel and Sony announced that actor Tom Holland will star as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in next year's CIVIL WAR and in the upcoming SPIDER-MAN reboots.

He seems a good choice. I saw videos on another site announcing this news that show Holland can do some of the moves as Spider-Man. It probably also helps that he trained in ballet and such for "Billy Elliot: The Musical."

For those people that are out there complaining about a teen-ager playing Spider-Man (showing how little they know about Spider-Man in doing so, BTW), Holland was born in 1996, and the film comes out in 2017, so he'll be an adult by the time a sequel is made, anyway.

Am I missing something? He's 19 years old right now, isn't he?

Before I clicked on the link, I was thinking, "Tom Holland...the history writer is playing Spider-Man?"

I'm good with Holland.
My only fear is that as he ages, he might pull an "Anthony Michael Hall" and turn out all rugged and manly-man.
Guess we'll have to see how the lad fills out.  Could work out fine, though.  Could work out perfectly!

The actor means nothing if they can't come up with a good script. Let's
hope sixth time is a charm.

Anthony>>Anthony Michael Hall didn't just turn out all rugged. <<

End up?  That sounds depressing.

But even ignoring that, he filled out such that he was no longer the wiry kid he was in "Breakfast Club"  where he might have been a decent Peter Parker to someone who looked more in the direction of Flash Thompson.

If he put on some muscle mass, he'd have been a much more convincing Hawkeye than Renner.
