Some small confessions:  growing up, I was more of a DC guy.  Superman, The Legion, JLA, Green Lantern, mostly my Uncle's collection of Golden Age titles that he'd left behind at my Grandmother's house and I devoured.  I was never into the Marvel Universe -- tho the HULK was one of my favorite TV shows. I stopped comics pretty  much after the Shooter/Grell days on LSH -- I felt like I was getting too old.

I got back into comics in college, specifically over the hooplah about Superman -- my first exposure to Byrne.  Good times.

So I've never read his FANTASTIC FOUR run.  Yeah, yeah -- gasp in shock and horror, but it's true.  I admit the FF never really grabbed me, but there I was on Amazon with the OMNIBUS vol.1 staring me in the face and I figured, what the hell?  I've liked everything else the guy's written...

It took me over a week to wade through the 1070-some odd pages -- literally a heavy book -- and I have to say I LOVED IT!!! I'm working through it a second time now.

Here were comics like comics I remembered -- plots and action and good clean fun.  Yeah, I didn't know everybody and everything, but I didn't need to.  I was able to jump in and get the gist of backstory.  It was just a good time.

More, it's fascinating to see JB's growth as a writer, both in his art and storytelling, but certainly in economy of words on the page.  All in all, a worthy investment -- so much so that I'm willing to buy the second volume.  And that's saying something.

Thanks for this great trip to the past, John.  I've really enjoyed the ride.  I highly recommend this FF OMNIBUS to all.

It just so happens I got Vol 1 Today !
My situation is different than yours Tom in that I had collected these issues thru 1980, then drifted from comic books (among other things fifty cents for a comic book was the clincher).
For the past year now I have been catching up on JB stuff since 1981, it's been a blast, Next Men, Alpha Flight, Wonder Woman, Superman, Namor etc., etc. What a ride it has been so far.
The F.F. Omnibus' is the dessert at the end of the meal , I took the plunge last week and got it today. 7lb's of glory.
Vol. 2 ,your next...

I was so excited to buy the JB vol. 1 over the weekend. I'm giving it to my son (19) and my other (step) son (9). It's so good I can give it as a gift to both of them and I know they'll both love it. The only problem is I have to wait my turn to read it. it's going to be a long wait because I haven't read the comics since they came out.

They'll both dig it. And you'll love it all over again.

It's great that such things, years later, can be new to someone and they get to have the fun of discovering them in the here and now. I have to admit I'm a little envious. I can't imagine the next thing I might find that could be filled with as much fun, character, and drama. I enjoy revisiting those early Byrne FF issues every now and then in back issue form or trade paperback, but it isn't the same as it was reading them for the first time.

Imagine what it would be like to pick up a modern FF and have it be that good and that much fun...! Wouldn't it be great if that were even possible any more?

JB's run on FF built beautifully on everything that went before, and elevated it to new heights.  It's at least half the reason the FF are my favorite superheroes.

The FF Omnibus is definitely a must-have.

With the trend in film these days I am absolutely SHOCKED that JB's run on the FF isn't being massaged into a movie series or even better a TV series. At least at the TV level we could get almost all of it instead of a condensed version of a few plots and arcs on a silver screen.

I still need to buy an omnibus. Congrats to you, Tom for taking the plunge.

How on earth is that a "confession"? ;-) (To the guy in the Superman T-shirt).

The thing that struck me when reading the omnibus was how Trek TOS the stories were in that, there was science fiction, action, humour, and it was still kid friendly. Its the perfect example to me of how sophisticated and fun comics can be,.

Once I encountered the sci-fi angle on the FF, I could understand why JB loved the team so much -- so up his alley.

I've said already -- and several people have echoed -- that the element of "fun" has been one of my favorite parts of this discovery.  Comics are fun!  Not "awesome" or "cool" or "sick" or "grim 'n gritty", just flat-out escapist enjoyment.

I'd forgotten.

Two things Tom.

First, congrats on discovering one of the greatest runs in the history of
comics.

Second, shame on you for waiting so long.

Ok, I lied, here's a third. One of my biggest problems with how a lot of
people have written the FF is that they're writing a superhero book
with science fiction and adventure in it.
IMO, the FF is a science fiction adventure book. They just happen to
hang out with superheroes and often save the world.

Really, I've only found five runs where the book was written that way.
Lee/Kirby's, JB's, Simonson's, Waid/Wieringo's and Hickman/Eptings.
Uncle Walt's run was way too short to get any traction with me. That
run was really the end of the FF for a good while, as the title went into
free fall right after. Hickman's writing while definitely science fiction
was very soap opera-esque and kinda boring.
