To me, Superman is one of those characters who should be left alone in the costume department.

Polishing a you-know-what comes to mind. A nice polish, mind you, but it is what it is.

Matt nailed it.

Really, if the powers that be at DC really hate Superman's red trunks so much, all they had to do was to take the traditional costume, remove the trunks, turn the belt from yellow to red, and bingo, you've got a costume that looks acceptable if not as good as the original.

This is sort of what Jim Lee did with the new Earth-2 Superman's costume.

(BTW, remember 30 years ago when DC was all about getting rid of those oh-so-confusing Earth-Two doppelgangers? Now we've got a Prime Earth Superman, an Earth-2 Superman, a Smallville Season 11 Superman...and probably others...it makes one miss Jeanette Kahn and Dick Giordano...)

I would love to see a Jazzy John take on the original costume, but this version looks like an Elseworlds or Future Superman.

And to add to Jason's list, there's also the Straczynski "Earth One" graphic novel version and they've even started the "Adventures of Superman" anthology which, as far as I can tell exists only to bring back the red shorts! (I wonder if these are inventory stories or some pros are just putting their foot down and saying they won't work on the Jim Lee armored version.)

And then on the armored, shorts-less SUPERMAN UNCHAINED comic, they keep doing alternate covers WITH the shorts!

I wonder if DC thinks that aggravating people increases sales.

Superman is special to us because as children our minds were "imprinted" by the character's specific look and character. There were lots of other kids who were turned off by him. No big deal, not everyone likes chocolate chip ice cream either. DC has to understand, messing with Superman doesn't just fail to change the minds of those who never cared, it turns off those who do.

Only iconic element of that costume is the "S" shield.

••

And even that's. . .   off.

Over the years, Superman's chest emblem settled into two distinct patterns. What I call "the Fat S," as favored by Neal Adams, among others, and "the Skinny S" as favored by Curt Swan (and your's truly). Basically, it's all about how the S is placed inside the frame. If it overlaps the frame, it looks "skinny", if it's completely within the frame, it looks "fat".

For the past decade or more, DC has been messing with the S at every opportunity, apparently missing the point that consistency is required in order to trademark something!

Superman's classic costume is great. Why does DC constantly *BLEEP*s with it?

Because they can? It's one reason I rarely ever look at today's comics by the Big Two. The current generation of creators and editors have made the old characters their own, respect for the franchise notwitstanding.

While it's good seeing a John Romita cover, the costume just doesn't cut it.

and Audry Hepburn sleeves

All my shirts have those sleeves.

We should start a pool on when they switch back to the real costume.

Of course, Jazzy Johnny could draw a can of tuna fish and make it look heroic. I recall the 2005 Marvel mini-series, the Sentry, and he drew an alternate cover to the main one drawn by JRjr - and I looked at them and thought that Junior's was a faint echo of a real super hero cover, as drawn by his dad.

The drawing here is gorgeous. It's a fantastic piece of art, and even just standing there, the character looks dynamic... and it seems obvious to me that it's drawn by someone who knows their comic business! Sadly and unfortunately... I also look at it and wonder who put a Superman S-shield on some other character.

Mr. Byrne had previously made note of a time when Marvel had almost come to own the DC heroes, and might have published their very own Superman #1. I dream of this, and - as well as fantasizing about Mr. Byrne's own spectacular talent on it - dream about a John Romita Sr. drawn Superman book.

Love the Romita art but the costume....no, my eye keeps getting drawn towards them knee pads. The nero collar doesn't work for me either.
