If there's a Superman artist who's underrated, I think it's Kurt Schaffenberger.  He had such a beautiful, clean style.

I'm currently collecting "Mr. & Mrs. Superman" stories in Superman Family to enjoy the work of Kurt Schaffenberger on the character. His stories of Captain Marvel and family in "Shazam!" are wonderful things as well! He also illustrated a few issues of Super Friends. All worth seeing and having!

My five favorite Superman artists:

Curt Swan- Head and shoulders above the rest.

Jose Garcia-Lopez
The Fleischer Studios
Jim Aparo
Neal Adams

Sadly, I don't know the Golden Age artists of Shuster and National's studios well enough to put names to the images I have of that era's Superman at this best. This list would be far more slanted in that direction if I did.

Good call with the Fleischer Studios Brad, their animation was just wonderfully done.

And yes, I wouldn't call anyone but Curt Swan the preeminent Superman artist.  He did a lot of wonderful work over the years.

And I would imagine you're familiar with Schaffenberger's work on Lois Lane.  There's some amazing stuff there!

I love Shaffenberger's work. The only reason I didn't include him is I
think of him more as a Superboy artist rather than a Superman artist.

Wayne Boring is my favorite and Curt Swan is my second-favorite, and they are way ahead of everyone else.

I'll go with Neal Adams, Jack Burnley, and Garcia-Lopez for the remaining three.

Robert, good catch with the Lois Lane art! I can't believe that didn't occur to me as I was writing that! The Showcase Presents volumes featuring the Superman Family have been some of my favorite reads recently! Taken in small doses, of course! :-)

Brian - Those stories have a certain charm to them, but I would agree that they're better in small doses.

This one's a classic -

This page is a great resource for learning more about identifying Golden-Age Superman artists, if you are so inclined.

Here's a nice page from Jack Burnley, by the way.  Was there ever a sexier Lois Lane?
