18" x 24" commission of the Defenders, dashing off in heroic fashion. The characters are:

Dr Strange

Nighthawk

Silver Surfer

Hellcat

Valkyrie

Hulk

Namor

Please have a nightime setting with Dr. Stange's Sanctum Sanctorum as a primary background element.

Please draw Dr Strange, Nighthawk, Hellcat, Valkyrie, and Hulk in the same costumes as the following:

LINK1

Please draw Namor in his trunks (not sharkskin)

This is a companion piece to several previous commissions requested by the same customer, for example:

LINK3

(It's curious how people feel the need to specify Namor in his trunks, not the sharkskin. I cannot imagine WHAT I could ever have said that would have given anyone the idea that that silly black suit would be my "default" setting for the Sub-Mariner!)

Wow....great commission.  Really makes me wish there had been a Byrne Defenders run.

The personality of each character is captured perfectly.  I particularly like Hellcat cheerfully hitching a ride with the Silver Surfer.

Really admiring the perspective on this!

Great Hulk and I love Hellcat sitting on the Surfer's board!

If I tried to list everything I like about this commission, I'd end up mentioning
everything shown!

I do want to echo Stuart's comment about hellcat though. That's a nice touch.
Oh, and I dig the way JB draws the Sub-Mariner. Not everyone is able to
properly portray him as a "skinny" guy who still looks powerful!

Hmmm... And I just noticed that the three original team members are higher
than the others. Whether intentional or not, that's pretty neat as well.

Working on this piece reminded me of the 2.5 seconds when I was considering working on DOCTOR STRANGE, and ideas about how to deal with the various classic tropes started percolating in my brain. One I actually used in my run on NAMOR -- the idea that people cannot see Strange's house unless they NEED to. I thought that might satisfy Marvel fans who'd actually trekked down to the Village to see what was "really" on that corner of Bleeker street. . .

(I wonder why my spellchecker thinks "Strange's" is misspelled? "Strange" IS a proper name, after all.)

Very nice, JB.  This would be a great pin-up in the back of a comic.

I don't think you've ever drawn a commission like this (ie going towards the viewer) with all the characters in the air at once.

WOW! As beautifully rendered as the characters are, I can't stop looking at the architectural elements of this piece (house, street, etc.). They're just SO well drawn!

Wow! There are two types of JB commissions. The first are the
commissions I enjoy seeing. The second are the ones I hate the
commissioner for getting a piece that I want in my collection. This
Defenders piece falls into the second category.

Love everything about it. Really like seeing Nighthawk. Love Dr. Strange's house most of all. Just really love the look of the brickwork. The lamppost with the street name is such a cool touch too. I am constantly amazed at how JB can turn the commission request into reality with such perfection.
