There are a lot of reasons for me to love science fiction and the visuals and the futuristic landscapes are some of them including exotic cityscapes.  As much as in space on futuristic Earth or on another planet. It is always wonderful to watch. John Byrne was one of my favorites in depicting futuristic and exotic landscapes and cityscapes. One of the best doing it and ahead of his time.
Where did John Byrne get the inspiration to draw such wonderful cities of the future?

Syd Mead, John Berkey and a host of others.

Syd Mead is a visionary.

I can see here in this picture design a resemblance to John Byrne's Kryptonian cityscape designs for Superman in 1986.

That is exactly the picture that inspired my designs for Krypton.

Berkey is astonishing. And from a technical point of view, too. Looked at closely, his paintings dissolve into what almost appear to be random slashes of paint. The way he brings it all together is beyond amazing!

BING!

He does it in part with a system of mirrors in his studio. He can look up and see the painting from across the room, to be sure it's working. Brilliant!

Brilliant is just the word. Such a singular talent.
