Bagging up some books at the store yesterday I was reminded of how Annuals are often done by creative teams that are essentially fill-ins.  Sometimes, not just fill-ins but people who are just getting their feet wet.

For a guy like you who can easily keep up, was this money taken out of your pocket?  Do they pay less than the normal page rate on the annuals?  Are annuals even a part of the deal when working on a title?

Thanks.

Any of the annuals I did paid my regular page rate. Mostly when I didn't do my own Annuals it was because schedules had been monkeyed with, and I didn't have the time.

Action Annual #6 was one of my favorite Superman stories. A fun read.

They started alright but by the mid 80's they had become inventory bottom of the drawer fill ins. Shame !

Annuals used to be so special. In the 70's as a kid, they were what you looked forward to in the summer. Hulk Annual 7, Avengers Annual 7, Marvel Two-In-One Annual 2, Thor Annual 6, Invaders Annual 1, Defenders Annual 1, I could go on and on and on.... They really were cool! Then as was said.. in the late 80's they became bottom of the barrel crap. Avengers Annual 10 I think is the last Annual that I remember coming out that just blew my mind story and artwise! Michael Golden just awesome! Spider-Man Annuals 13-15 were amazing too. 13 drawn by JB and 14 and 15 by Frank Miller.

Once in awhile some good ones do happen. But I suppose threw my then 8-10 year olds eyes any comic that was large size like that blew my mind.

Spider-Man Annuals 13-15

Don't forget # 16, with the new Captain Marvel, the Thing, and The Avengers, by Stern and the Romita boys. One of my faves.

I thought JB's Fantastic Four annuals were exceptional and a perfect use of the format, but most other annuals by others artists were largely disappointments for me.

When you look at JB's annuals and his double size issues (FF's "Terror in a Tiny Town", X-Men's "Fate of the Phoenix") and it shows that JB knows how to pace these longer stories.

"Terror in a Tiny Town" was Triple-sized if memory serves... My mind exploded when I saw it.

I always thought in the late 80's the DC Annuals were far superior to some of the ones Marvel was producing.

Thanks for that link, William! I had never read that issue. I love the misdirection with "L" - I was totally expecting Luthor!

My favorite Annuals is the 80's FF/Avengers Skrull crossover. One
book was the flip side image of the other. As I recall, Kyle Baker inked
JB for the FF Annual which made for an interesting combination. Not
bad, but interesting.
