The Powers That Be at Marvel and DC have become trapped in a cycle of diminishing returns. It has become virtually impossible for them to look at the product and even THINK that a shrinking market might be due to anything other than "outside" influences. Certainly it cannot be anything THEY are doing.

Allegedly, one of Joe Quesada's first pronouncements as EiC at Marvel was that readers no longer EXPECTED the books to come out on a monthly basis. This was welcomed by a contingent of writers, artists and editors, but what kind of slipped by in the great sigh of relief issuing from the "creatives" was that this represented a major change in the business model. This was an ADMISSION OF FAILURE being seen as progressive thinking.

So, down the line it all tumbles. The companies have surrendered control to the Direct Sales Market, and nothing must be done to upset the DSM, even if it means maintaining a suicidal spiral that will eventually DESTROY the DSM, just as the DSM destroyed the newsstand.

Scott, Alex, Gabriel.

Not an altogether good fit either, really.

Let's not forget the Black guy who was a subject of the Super Soldier project BEFORE Steve Rogers!

------

By the fifth issue of that miniseries, they established that Isaiah Bradley was part of an attempt to recreate the Super-Soldier serum after Erskine's death and not one of the candidates prior to Steve Rogers.

Vulcan's name is Gabriel Summers.

Does anyone remember the story that established (or at least, strongly implied) that the ridiculous character known as "Adam X the X-Treme" was actually the third Summers brother?

Edited to note: Re: "Truth": That was backpedalling, though, Michael. The original plan was that Isaiah got the serum first. I think it was realized after the first issue came out that the dates did not mesh with established continuity, so they changed the story to match that.

Yeah, I remember that. Was it in an Annual?

I believe so. He had some "touching story" with "Grandpa Summers" or somebody in Alaska.

From www.comicvine.com -

Origin
Intended to be the third Summers brother, Adam-X's mother was Katherine Summers who was abducted by ' D'Ken, the Shi'ar emperor, his father. Erik The Red revealed to X-Treme that he was the heir to D'Ken's Shi'ar throne. After his mother was murdered by D'Ken, Adam-X was raised by a farmer named Jonath on the planet Ch'reesharaa.

However the writer of the series whom introduced Adam X left the series and the character before he could reveal that Adam was the third Summers brother, and so it was retconned. This means that Adam X has no ties to the X-men Cyclops or Havok and the third Summers brother has been revealed to be Vulcan.

According to the writer the initial plan was for the story to be out of continuity, but editorial wanted to make it canon which necessitated changing around the dates. Regardless of the intent, the published story has the events happening after Pearl Harbor, which places TRUTH after Steve Rogers turning into Captain America.

Unless Marvel brings back Steve's "brother" Mike.

Yeah I hate where they're going with Ben Grimm but it shows the lack of respect that Matt Fraction has for the character. In another thread, we were talking about DC being so hardcore about not letting their creators do stuff due to editorial interference but it seems to be the opposite at Marvel where they let their creators do whatever they want with the characters.

Terrible idea. A lot of the classic characters have perfect origins. Dr Doom is one of them. Simple, effective, timeless. The adage says if it ain't broke, don't fix it; in addition to that I'd add 'don't think you can improve on perfection'.

So regarding this Thing/Doom storyline, what has actually been shown? I see that this is the focus of this month's episode which doesn't come out for two weeks, and based on Marvel's blurb about it, I expect some bait and switch.

If a college-aged Ben had taken part in a prank gone awry, he would have long come clean to Doom in order to spare the rest of his family from Doom's misdirected need for revenge. Any story that doesn't acknowledge this doesn't work. And making Doom right about his experiment being sabotaged diminishes Doom's villainy by not making him a victim of his own hubris.
