Marc Spector was a mercenary who was making up for his past evils as Moon Knight. I think that makes him closer to The Shadow (dependant on which origin you look at) than Batman.

I love the Moench-Sienkiewicz Moon Knight!

I see him basically as a super-hero for the NYC that Martin Scorsese depicts in Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, etc.!

Unfortunately, no other creative team can pull it off!

I never understood the multiple identities thing and I was never a big fan of his costume. he just looks all white to me and I find it doesn't grab me. Then marvel introduced this guy:

They look so similar!

BTW, no doubt that Batman inspired Moon Knight, but Moon Knight also inspired Batman:

Those crescent moon knives that Moon Knight throws were later adopted by Batman in the form of the tiny bat-razors Batman throws at criminals. Yes, Batman had a batarang long before Moon Knight existed, but the throwing-star-type weapon Batman didn't use before Moon Knight. And, more importantly, the Batman of the 1940s' through the early 1980s' was very unlikely to use such a weapon that would actually cut its victim.

Does anyone know for sure when Batman started used his bat-razors? I don't recall ever seeing him use them before "The Dark Knight Returns." In his regular titles, I think it was some time later before he started using them in those books.

Edited to add image with Batman using the razors:

I never understood why Moon Knight needed the Batman elements at all. I think it would have been much more interesting if he would have just been a merc, or better yet, an Egyptian/American. (I'd go for just Egyptian, but I'm trying to be somewhat realistic...)

I fall into the category of "Always Loved Moon Knight, Never Bought His Book."

I enjoyed seeing him pop up in other people's books; I fondly remember an issue of Spectacular Spider-Man and a Marvel Team-Up Annual (Spider-Man, Power Man & Iron Fist, Daredevil, and Moon Knight vs. The Purple Man).

If there were some way to (respectfully) do a "Marvel 70s/80s Forever Anthology," featuring characters like Moon Knight, Power Man & Iron Fist, ROM, Nova, Giant-Man, Stingray, the Defenders, I'd be first in line to buy it!

Perhaps there could even be a Micronauts back-up story every now and again.

But I dream...

@Matt: I'm pretty sure the bat-razors debuted in DARK KNIGHT
RETURNS. I specifically remember thinking "Whoa--what the--" when
he first uses them.

As I noted earlier; before his THE HULK! back-up feature, I wasn't even
aware that the character existed. Still haven't read his debut story but I
have seen that WEREWOLF BY NIGHT cover many times. Judging by
said cover, he looks more like a guy whose specific mission is hunting
and fighting werewolves. Pretty far from a Batman knock-off.

I think the bat razors grew out of Frank Miller's ninja fascination--I'd be surprised if Moon Knight had anything to do with it, but who knows?

When I first encountered Moon Knight, I liked him. I thought it was neat that
his "power" waxed and waned with the phases of the moon. Somewhere
along the way, I lost interest.
