Mr Byrne -- I searched the FAQs but found nothing, but I'm sure I'm not the first to ask this:   Was it a conscious decision on your part to give Alpha Flight's "The Master" character a beard resembling Roger Delgado's (The original Master from Doctor Who)?

Then -- as a follow up question -- did you have any "grand plans" for The Master (in AF) had you stayed with the book longer or was he just going to be like a Dr Doom character and pop in from time to time to cause trouble?

Thanks.

••

The Master was inspired by the character Robur in Jules Verne's novels ROBUR THE CONQUERER and MASTER OF THE WORLD. More specifically, on the Classics Illustrated versions of those tales, which I read as a kid.

It is neat to know where the character "sprang" from, though.   THANKS

Story Told Before: When I was designing the Master for ALPHA, I could not get Brother Blood, the TEEN TITANS villain, out of my head. It seemed like every version I came up with for my guy looked like a variant on Blood. Finally I gave up and "settled" on the one you saw, which was the furthest I could get from the Perez character.

Years later, I saw George at a con, and mentioned this. He laughed. Bother Blood, he told me, was his attempt to design a "Byrne costume". So no wonder it stuck in my brain!!

I really enjoyed the character, as well as his origin and stark design.

I shudder to think what Marvel has done with him since AF 4 <g>....
