20" x 30" imaginary cover commission of Dark Phoenix vs. Dr. Doom and the Fantastic Four; the details are:

- please include the Fantastic Four logo and "World's Greatest Comics Magazine" circa Fantastic Four # 249
- no price or issue number, but do include the character heads/images in the upper left of the cover based on the one used in Fantastic Four # 249
- background of Dr. Doom's castle with lots of rubble
- focus on confident Dr. Doom w/some cosmic weapon and Dark Phoenix with Sue and Ben also featured prominently
- please draw Dark Phoenix with a full/menacing Phoenix effect with inked detail in effect similar to the following:

LINK

- smooth cloak on Dr. Doom
- Sue's hairstyle as shown in Fantastic Four # 255
- please include a hidden Barney Rubble

Wow! Great Stuff!

Makes me wonder how much of a threat Doom could be to Dark Phoenix

"Realistically", there's not too many this side of Galactus who would really be a threat to Dark Phoenix -- but then, "realism" doesn't usually make for very exciting superhero stories!

At 20 x 30 you would need one hell of a big newsstand!

Well, you know, older comics used to be bigger. . . .

Wow, the full-size version must be staggeringly impressive. That is a brilliant Doom (with uber-gadgets to boot). You've never drawn the Thing better than you do today and I love Dark Phoenix's face -- perfect. I wish I could see more of Doom's castle. It really would be a thrill to see this as the cover of a new comic.

I wish I could see more of Doom's castle.

••

Reading the customer's request, I was confronted with a lot of hard choices. Well, maybe not so hard. But since I was asked to show Doom's castle, AND a lot of rubble, AND the Phoenix Effect, AND have the focus on Doom and his weapons, AND Sue and Ben and Phoenix. . .

Well, I figured the characters were more important than the architecture!

(I've had a number of requests over the years for images with detailed backgrounds AND figures that fill a lot of space -- big wings or capes, or flares like the Phoenix Effect. They take me back to my old line about why Hawkman always has to stand at the back!)

Phoenix looks great!  Love the usage of space given all the specifics in the request!  Well done!

Where Dr Doom is involved in a story, you have to make room for the possibility of his success! He's a villain that commands respect and not to be underestimated. Most of his encounters are of his own mechanitions and  foreplanned!*

So, I see this fantastic image and I'm wondering what it is that Doom has up his sleave (So-to-speak) and not, "Oh dear he's horribly out gunned!".

Great illo John.

-D

* In fact, Galactus could turn up in this scene and I still wouldn't rulle Doom out!
