Steve Rogers was the Captain when he lifted Mjolnir way back in the day during the time when John Walker was serving as Captain America.

All I'm thinking is that if there's somebody outside of Thor who should be worthy - why wouldn't it be Steve Rogers?

Logically, the whole "if he be worthy" part of the origin should have been forgotten once Stan and Jack retconned Don Blake into a construct created by Odin. When Thor first appeared, he was Don Blake transformed by the POWER of Thor, but he was not ACTUALLY Thor. Pretty standard guy-gets-powers superhero riff. The implication was that ANY "worthy" man could have gained "the power of THOR(R)".

But the more anal fans kept asking "what happened to the REAL Thor?". And eventually Stan told them. I've often wondered if his famous advice to "never give the fans what they THINK they want" was born out of this experience.

Funny how much that Ironman sounds like movie Ironman.

...and floating weightless through space is the only way he should be able to lift, or not lift it.
