Greg Woronchak brings up an important point Larsen chooses to ignore. And, note, there is no "mind reading" in declaring this a conscious choice on Larsen's part. The pages were drawn for color, and judging them as if they were intended to be viewed in black and white is, at best, disingenuos, and at worst simply dishonest. The fact that Larsen's assesment of the pages is WRONG is a minor point in this light.

Somebody should "correct" Larsen's art, but it would probably become a full-time job.

The "fixing" of the layouts looks to me based entirely on purely personal taste. In fact, even though the "fixed" version is essentially the same from a storytelling point of view, it is less fun to look at. And probably would have been less fun to draw that way as well.
God help us if Larsen decided to "fix" one of Will Eisner's superpanel pages by cleaning it up and putting everything into rectangular boxes.

"and the Thing given a bath"
So basically get rid of all the texture on the Thing?! I personally prefer him rough and rocky than smooth and marble-y.

Perhaps they left a lot of the "dirt" out back in the days when they were still printing the comics on cheap recycled newspaper, but I'd agree that it wasn't necessary to remove the rock textures once improved printing technologies and higher quality paper came into use. Methinks that Larsen is trying to kill time with his publishing schedule for Savage Dragon slowing down. Edit: I just had this thought about "fixing" the layouts -- since "Professor Larsen" has more time to do things like this, why not redraw all of the pages from scratch?

Is it the most egregious thing that Larsen could have done to an example of JB's work? Probably not... but it certainly is very poor form.

I own that piece of art with the Thing. I bought it because I thought it was awesome (still do). Thanks, Erik, for trying to piss on it.
Perhaps Larsen could photoshop out the doorframe next to my arm for being an unacceptable 'tangent'.

At best, it comes across as "this is how I would have done it". Well, great, Erik - but isn't that why you draw your own comicbooks?
And therein lies the rub - it's that old arrogance at play, "if it's not the way I do things, then it's wrong".
It's not about whether the person making that statement is a better or worse artist than the target of their criticism, either (although if you're going to declare yourself of a level to tell the likes of Neal Adams and JB how to do their job, you'd better be God with a pencil...) - it's the mere presumption that people doing things differently to you isn't because they have different influences or stylistic preferences - they're just 'not as good as you'. Doesn't take much detective work to realise that someone who thinks like that is a self-absorbed, self-satisfied jackass...

Peter - good grief. Surely Larsen knows it's a commission, and that someone paid for it (and were very happy with the results!) - heck, he used to post on the forums, so he knows the deal.
That's the height (or depths) of unprofessionalism - because it goes beyond slagging off another artist, and as you say, pisses on what should be a thing that gives the customer a lot of enjoyment.
Don't let this detract from said enjoyment! As I say, this is the behaviour of a jackass.
[EDIT] Didn't know it wasn't an actual commission - my mistake (oops!). But yeah - the point still stands.

It wasn't a commission, Rick. JB drew it just to get it out of his system, and then I pounced via Jim Warden. Same difference though.
