"It's never been made clear to me how the transporters work, exactly.  People beam down and up ..."

That's all I needed to know.  But I'm an easy room!

Explaining things like that are pretty pointless because the explanation now needs an explanation.  How exactly would a "Heisenberg compensator" work to allow it to skirt around a law of physics?  So long as it's technobabble, it's an endless chain.  The simplest solution is to simply not explain how it works in the first place.

Plus, it pretty much instantly bogs the story down with stuff the audience almost certainly doesn't need to know.

Not explaining makes it easier for the audience to be an Easy Room!

A small amusement: Two days ago I put the finishing touches on the cover for the third trade paperback, containing issues 6, 7 and 8. None of which have been published yet.

Lead time, man! Gotta love it!

Yeah, but it kills me to know that they're finished and I can't read 'em !

Somewhat akin to your frustration, Doug, I started in comics when the lead time for having the pencils finished was about six months. This meant I spent the first half a year of my career saying, when asked, that I was a comicbook artist, but having to follow immediately with "Nothing has come out yet."

Longest six months of my life!

Cripes half a year ! Friends and family must have been "chomping at the bit" waiting for your first work to show up.
Either that or would just humor you then behind your back say "poor John he really believes he's a comic book artist".

"Gold Key crossover"!!!

That image on the lower right corner of the trade's cover looks
suspiciously familiar to me, since I read most of the Gold Key run, last
year.

This should be interesting!

Old-timers here will have realized, I'm sure, that there was no way I could build that "Gold Key" style transporter room and not find something to DO with it!!

A peek:
