As training camp is set to open tomorrow for some teams and Monday for many more, two injuries now appear more ominous than first anticipated:

Kyle Kuzma's USA basketball foot injury will now keep him out "indefinitely"; at least through training camp and plausibly into the season.  A big deal for the top-heavy Lakers, who were counting on Kuzma to carry a heavier load in his third year, particularly with the steep drop off in quality after their starters.

Victor Oladipo's return from his January knee mangling now has "no timetable," which is obviously a setback for Indiana considering he was their best player until his injury.

Projecting a player's likelihood of NBA success based on summer league is dicey but #33 Celtics pick Carsen Edwards to me looked as comfortable offensively as any draftee.  He averaged 19.4 points on a blistering 47% from threes (many from Curry-like distances) and reminded me of another lightly regarded lower pick from a few years back named Kyle Kuzma, who shot the lights out in his summer league and has since averaged 17.3 PPG in 2 NBA seasons.  Edwards is tiny at 6'0" and he's not much of a distributor (1.4 assists) but the guy looks fearless and I'm hopeful he will exceed expectations.  Unfortunately the Celtics still glaringly lack a defensive big barring someone like Robert Williams III or 7'6" project Tacko Fall vastly exceeding expectations themselves.   Carsen Edwards Highlights

LeBron James chastised Daryl Morey for his pro-democracy "fight for freedom" tweet and came off really badly.  Dude, you're worth hundreds of millions.  Is it really that necessary to protect your brand with the Chinese government?

Carsen Edwards, the 2nd round rookie whose offense I liked in summer league, just went for 30 vs. Cleve including an absurd 26 pts in the third quarter alone (8 of 9 three pointers, some from Ghana, in that quarter).  If he can just transcend his 6 foot height and play some D...

Pascal Siakam is quite solid but $130 mill for 4 years is $32.5 mill per year for a guy whose best season (last year) was 16.9 PPG, 6.9 reb, and 3.1 assists is a bit rich.  Particularly when he only averaged about 6 PPG and a little over 4 rebounds and 1 assist in his first two seasons.  Sure he has more upside potential, but why re-sign him now when you could give him the same contract next year and see if that potential panned out?

It's just two losses (albeit both by blowout) but... GS in '15 - '16 didn't lose their second game until December 30th.  And they didn't lose two in a row once that entire season.

Steph out with a fracture in his left hand.

For the Warriors, when it rains it pours.

Although mgmt. is publicly adamant against it, there will surely be discussions about whether to tank and let the youngsters develop if Curry is out for months.  GS can't go anywhere with both Klay and Curry missing and even with one of them, they can't go far in the deep west but they could definitely use a high draft pick given their capped out status which precludes major shuffles without crazy gymnastics.  Welcome to your new $1.4 billion dollar self-financed arena GS... I'm sure prepaid season ticket holders will keep it full this year but you better pray things turn around or that price tag is going to start looking awfully expensive next year.

Now Green's finger is yaked.  Curry's surgery reportedly will keep him out 3 months.

History on both ends as LeBron becomes the oldest person ever to get a 30-10-15 game (39 pts, 12 rebs, 16 assists) as he outduels Doncic's 31 pts, 13 rebs, 15 assists (youngest ever 30-10-15).  LBJ leads the league in assists.  Lakers and Celtics are both 4-1 though it's early (Spurs and T-Wolves are atop the West standings too, which won't last.)  Another early surprise is Phoenix, who is only 3-2 BUT beat the Clippers and at GS handily while losing to good Denver and Utah clubs by one point each despite being cellar dwellers on every expert's list.

Good night for Pascal Siakam with 44 points, tying his career-high set last season. Bit worrying for the Raptors that both Ibaka and Lowry got injured though.
