I belive this is the first interview I read from JB.  Terry and Claremont were in this also.

I have that one too, Neil! :)

Many of these magazines contain Byrne sketches I've never seen reprinted before. Lots of great, older art.

It's also fun to read Byrne's original story plans... and then see where the books ended up.

These magazines were almost impossible for me to find when I was a kid... most of them I bought years later.

I guess the internet was the death of those old magazines? Instead of reading Byrne interviews in a magazine, we now read his thoughts and opinions on this site. We see previews of his work on this site. We see drawings from his sketch book on this site. Is it fair to say, sites like this one continue the tradition of those old comic magazines? I never really thought about that before...

I didn't have access to these magazines either Nathan.  I mail ordered the X-Men Companion, IIRC.  Even Marvel mags like BIZARRE ADVENTURES were out of my reach.  My poor grandmother drove me all over three counties for this one..and never did find it!  Got it years later.  I bought a second copy for $1 about a month ago.

I remember seeing an ad for Byrne's Last Galactus Story. I could never find a store that sold EPIC.

It would be a number of years to find all of these... it took old bookshops, comic stores, and finally Ebay...

I could find Marvel Age. Read lots of Marvel Age interviews when I was a kid.

To an extent. I still enjoy publications like ROUGH STUFF, BACK
ISSUE and ALTER EGO. They tend to look back instead of what's
current and "hot". Then there's THE JACK KIRBY COLLECTOR and
MODERN MASTER series. While there are still a few comicbooks I
enjoy reading, I find reading these more entertaining than most of the
comics on the stands today.

On a slightly related note, I did stop buying movie magazines a little while back and now when I go to the cinema, everything that happens in a movie is a surprise. Sort of. I guess I get little things from trailers and movie posters, but when I actually watch the films, well the less I know, the more satisfying it is.

Comics should be the same. It can't be the same if you pick up a preview magazine three months prior to an issue and learn that someone's gonna die or get unmasked. Better to read the issue and find that out yourself!

I still enjoy reading Back Issue and Alter Ego, also, due to the many interviews with creators who are not the flavor of the month.  These magazines don't spoil any new comic's plot lines.
I was also fortunate to find Hero magazines in a used book store for .49.  I had never heard of this magazine and  enjoyed reading them.   But the best part was that one of magazines was still sealed in its bag with JB's Proto-Tykes magazine in it.
