In the New Art thread, this double page spread was posted...
Byrne's commented on the piece...
"Beautifully rendered, but a complete waste of a double page spread."
I was confused why that was the case. I asked if these spreads were also a waste of space (I think they both worked really well as DPS)...
Byrne offered more... "A double page spread should be more than just a large panel. There should be much more STORY to the picture than could be contained in, say, a full page splash or, especially, half a page. The "style" of the Spider-Book then, as dictated by the plot, was to have pages 2 and three be a spread, but the scene shown was not always fully worthy of two entire pages. You may have noticed these days when I do double page spreads they are likely to be multiple panels, "cinematic" shots with actions that "cascade" across the fold." Byrne posted this example... 
As a comic book reader, I feel a double page spread doesn't have to have a ton of extra story. I enjoy an occasional, big, visual punch if it works with the pacing. That's my opinion. When I first read AF #12, I was completely blown away by this DPS... 
...I feel it still works! I'm sure there's a way to draw that DPS as a single page, but I love what the AF #12 DPS did for the storytelling.
Opinions? Have a favorite DPS to post?

Nathan, I think that double page spread works for an entirely different reason...a situation of epic nature: the first meeting of Spider-Man and Super Man! I see what JB is saying...my favorite example of a doulbe page "cinematic" shot is the one he did in his Jurassic Park mini...the last issue I believe. Man, if anyone has a scan of that, please post it (I can't find my copy right now!) The moment captured was amazingly rendered.

DPS's by Perez are pretty awesome. Notables would be stuff from New Teen Titans (Judas Contract, Blackfire, etc.), Crisis, Avengers vol. 3 and JLA/Avengers.
As mentioned upthread Kirby was no slouch either.

.....this one has a lot of story, character names and the title. I don't recall a double page spread in XMen during that time so this was special....and how else does one follow the Watcher telling you the Phoenix is about to hit the fan?
Probably my favorite depiction of the Beast of all time. He's the Avenger Beast, he's funny, but he's also a capable leader cuz he's with the Xmen.
Hard to not pang for the originals in this story.

I think the storytelling point of a DPS should be impact.... I think the two Spier-Man pieces and the Alpha Flight piece all add something to the story. The Spider-Man one's I think certainly could have been single page spreads, but I think they still work. Even the Kirby one.... lots of IMPACT.
The Nightwing one that started this..... its a pretty drawing, but it tells me nothing.... that same image could have been a half page and add the same thing to the story. I'll have to dig around for some ones I like.
I'll note... DPS that I HATE... the "you have to turn the book sideways" to read the page tall DPS. Pointless. Turning the book takes me COMPLETELY out of the story and its essentially the same proportions as a full page... why double the size and make the reader turn the book. Bad storytelling.

Sadly, I don't have the issue anymore... I think it may have been the first real double-page spread that JB did on his INCREDIBLE HULK run... the image of a humongous, holographic Hulk ready to pounce on little Bruce Banner. My middle school buddy and I--both of us huge comic nerds and JB fans at the time ('85?)--thought this was the single greatest image of the Hulk. Ever! Somebody post it, please!
