Marvel released ORIGIN, it's own tale spelling out pretty much everything about their own mysterious character.

The depths of my hatred for ORIGIN and everything it did (or undid?) cannot be measured using human technology.

I don't want to know the origin of a character named The Phantom Stranger.

Wow.  This sucks.  Thanks for nothing DC.

As a poster above said: at least we have our Jim Aparo classics.

Wait a minute, is this why they just released Walt Simonson's most recent graphic novel after all these years? As a tie-in?

I looked up a spoiler, since I'm not going to read any current DC anyway. This is the second time one of my favorite fictional characters was given an origin that made him that guy, one in comics now and one in a movie about a decade ago.

This is a story I'm going to ignore and I suspect DC will also in a few years.

aside from the fact that Roger Stern had years ago come up with a PERFECT origin for the Phantom Stranger (he's Terry Thirteen)

***

JB, If you recall, could you explain how Roger got from point A to point B on that?

It's been a long time since I read the SECRET ORIGINS issue that
Steven posted. Time plays trick on the mind sometimes and my
memory of that issue was that he was who they are now claiming him
to be. Even though I don't think that was the actual story in that issue.
I actually think it's a cool backstory for A CHARACTER but agree with
JB that the Phantom Stranger should remain just that " a stranger".

Sometimes they don't realize what makes a particular character intriguing.

This is definitely on of those times.

Couldn't agree more about the Phantom Stranger. Why ruin a good thing? It's amazing what creators just don't GET nowadays. It seems symptomatic of the compulsive need for spoilers across all entertainment media.
