So wrong, and yet, so cool...

Hm.  Not a fan of this at all.

Frank Miller is hit or miss with me in general.  Or, he was hit or miss.  Now he's just miss on whatever he touches.  IMHO.

Aaand.  I have a major problem with this piece and it's a problem I have with a lot of artists (even the legends!) that draw Spider-Man.

The forearm webbing.

1. No one draws it consistently.  Sometimes, they'll put the points aiming upwards towards the biceps while the rest of the arm has them aiming downward.  Kills the flow.  Sometimes they'll do it the opposite way.

2. Some draw them differently on each arm on the same drawing! Left arm points up, right arm points down! Kirby did it right here.

Am I being too harsh? I mean, is this one of those details that falls under the same category as the rock pattern on The Thing? I think they're very different.

Does quite hit it for me. I would love to see the pencils too though. If only...

Nah.  That's a trick that's been around as long as people have been drawing Spider-Man.

I'm with Dan....wrong, yet very cool!  This looks like recent Frank Miller.  Where is this from Dan?

A trick?

Please explain.

Ronald - John Romita Sr. does it that way. I may prefer the Ditko original, but I would never in a million years accuse ROMITA of drawing Spider-Man wrong! He's as right as right can be!

Kirby, Ditko, Romita, JB, etc. - If there's a correct way to draw something, "correct" being another word for "on model," a popular term on this site and someone is doing it a different way, then they're doing it wrong.  There's no other way to see it.

I'm not saying that those I mentioned above are any less talented.  I'm questioning why they're doing it the way they're doing it.  Which is, in this case, wrong.

I remember seeing this, but cannot remember where or when. I now wonder if this was done while Kirby was alive. As a single image, just as a curiosity, I like it. It is fun to see different styles combined to see how they would work, even if not ultimately preferable.

But it IS on model. Especially if Romita Sr. did it! Fer crying out loud, he was the guy who made sure everyone ELSE stayed on model!

Count me in the "cool, but wrong" crowd. It's a fun "one-off" kind of
thing to look at but I wouldn't want a steady diet of it.

Ditko even has the webs going different directions at times.  The cover to issue 14 I know for sure as an example.  I'm sure JB will chime in with the explanation of why it is done artistically.
