Hi JB,

Did you have any say over the contents of MTIO when you were on FF?  Well aside from issue 100, that is.  I'm guessing that you did not, which seems a bit strange since you were the main man on the parent title.

Thanks.

I took over writing the title when it became THE THING, but I honestly don't remember how much input I had before that.

As a kid, I used to read then back-issues of Marvel Two-in-One, and I liked them a lot more than Marvel Team-Up. I think the Thing works as a team-up character a little better than Spider-Man, and as a "cosmic adventurer", Ben seems less out of place in myriad environments. Friends and I have talked about how Benjy may be Marvel's most versatile character. There are a lot of different kinds of stories you can use him in, and he still feels like the Thing. He plays well off of most characters as well.

I feel differently. To me Ben always felt like he should be in the FF as part of that team, not teaming up with some other heroes. Objectively Spider-Man really should be a bit of a loner, as that's the way the character has been set-up, and therefore it's a bit of a fudge to have him teaming up with other heroes every month, but Spider-Man is such a wonderful -- and friendly -- character that I thought it did work really well in Marvel team-up.

But then again I grew up with Spider-man and hs Amazing Friends...

I agree with Tony... I think the Thing works very well with other characters and in different contexts.  The first ten issues or so of Marvel Two in One (the ones written by Steve Gerber) and Ben's guest appearance in Defenders #20 are probably more responsible for my falling in love with the character than the issues of Fantastic Four that were being published concurrently.

At the Motor City con last week, I had a spur-of-the-moment urge to start buying issues of TWO-IN-ONE.

For some time, I've been working to get all of the FF comics up through the early 90s (with the intent of eventually sitting down and taking in all of that history, good and bad), and I'd been meaning to get the entire TWO-IN-ONE series, as well.

Thanks to 50-cent and $2 bins, I managed to get some 2/3 of the entire series for around $100. I then placed an order at an online vendor for most of the issues I didn't find. Not bad for one day's shopping!

Jason - I love those early issues of Marvel Two-in-One too.

The first story I ran across was the Thing/Captain America/Guardians of the Galaxy one and continued though the issues by Sal Buscema, Ron Wilson, George Perez and JB.  I also have an affinity for that Marvel Feature issue with the Thing and the Hulk.  But my favorite issue is undoubtedly the annual by Jim Starlin with the Thing, Spider-Man, Captain Mar-Vell, the Avengers and Adam Warlock against Thanos.

And I thing Marvel Team-Up was great too, especially the issues drawn by Gil Kane, Sal Buscema and JB.  The Spider-Man/Yellowjacket/Wasp issues are probably my favorite of the series.

I had liked the Thing since I was little, but that Annual story made him my favorite hero because they could not defeat his spirit.
