Here is the first appearance of Logan without the mask from X-Men #98 by
Dave. I own the original page and the original panel had been cut out and
this one taped in.

Wonder if Wolverine having an "interesting" face and even a "cool" name led to our seeing more of him unmasked and more people simply calling him "Logan."

Wolverine is also depicted as being the same character in uniform and without. I like the Bruce Wayne is not Batman. Clark Kent is not Superman. A "transformation" of sorts occurs when they change into their costumes. If Wolverine looked sort of average without his mask and his name was "Lionel" or something, maybe it wouldn't have been as cool to have him out of costume.

Ha! I used to own that page! Gonna guess you paid more for it than I did.

Technically, tho, the first shot of Wolverine without his mask is on the previous page, the splash.

That widow's peak is a little out of control.

I heard that originally Wolverine was to be some kind of mutated wolverine(?), maybe the 'weird' hair had something to do with that...

JB's version looks more human and I like it better (although Cockrum's version grew on me)...

Wow...an interesting and intriquing "what if" view of Wolverine. I like it,.. it conveys a lot of depth and mystery the character once had. Also I was never a fan of pointy hair but I quess that had a more animalistic quality to it.

I am so used to the other face my brain is trying to imagine the new face with the mask on to see if they are really the same person/image when in costume.

Not "originally". That was something Chris and Dave came up with later, but they didn't do it before Archie Goodwin (without knowing of their plans) used the same gag for Spider-Woman's origin. (It was the High Evolutionary at work.)

Dave's Wolverine design tho, as noted, was a more "savage" version of what he'd been drawing for Timberwolf in the Legion. I was not aware of the more "recent" Legion characters at the time, but looking back I am surprised Marvel let him do a design that was so close.

(I do wonder if I was somehow "subliminally" aware of Timberwolf. My own redesign for Wolverine's costume is not altogether unlike the one Timberwolf wore.)
