JB, what can you share about the Logan head sketch that Jim had at that con
that seemed to reveal his 'original' under the mask look. Logan had a caesar
cut and a 'broken' nose. I would love to hear whatever you remember about
designing the look or the subsequent changes. Maybe Bill took a picture...
Also, one guy thought it looked like it had come out of someone else's
sketchbook, because it was perforated at the top. I forget whose he thought
it was though, maybe Terry Austin's.

Ah, yes -- that was my original suggestion for Wolverine's face. I sent that to Chris and he responded "You blew it! Dave has already designed Wolvie's face."Not sure how that constituted me "blowing it", but that seemed to be Chris' favorite phrase at the time. (When he asked me to draw his mother into an issue of MARVEL TEAM-UP, but sent no reference, I did the best I could based on having met her once before, and his response was "You blew it!") Later, I modified that Wolverine face considerably, and it became Sabretooth. Dave's design was, of course, based on Timberwolf, who he'd been drawing for a while in the Legion of Superheroes.

Wolverine was such a complex and interesting character back when JB and Claremont were on the X-Men. I had never seen a character like him. One, of many, things that stands out was the reveal that his name is Logan. There were teases, like when he met Moriko and gave her a flower. She asked him his name and all he got out was "Lo" before an earthquake hit. Speculation on his name was a main topic between my friends and I. At the time I had not completed my collection back to 94. When I did, I saw that his name had already been revealed! A great example of the fact that a writer can ignore something that has happened previously and still generate interest and mystery for new readers, while not ruining anything for long time readers.

Yeah, Wolverine's shrouded past was a HUGE part of his appeal to me (and other readers, apparently)as a character. Revealing too much of his history as well as making him ACTUALLY "the best there is at what he does" as opposed to his THINKING he is has pretty much ruined the character for me.

Y'know, I am almost certain that Wolverine's tag line started out as "doing what he does best" and somehow morphed into "the best there is at what he does". Which is not necessarily the same thing!

I really like the JB version of Wolverine's face, it seems more real to me than the published version. I noticed the plaid shirt made into the book, at least.
I've always wondered if Wolverine's popularity wasn't due to him being kind of a "Conan in tights". Back when he started, only the non-superhero (non-costumed) characters could play for keeps.

I really like this look --- it's hard to 'forget' Wolverine's actual look but I like the angry young man feel this has.

I like that look for him a lot. If he went berserk I think I would be more unexpected and scarier since he has a more normal look.
