JB, something just came to mind re some of your work on UXM such as DOFP or The Dark Phoenix Saga.

Both of those storylines spanned several issues yet occurred over a relatively short amount of "real" time.  Yet compared to what has become known as "deconstructionism," the storylines never fetl padded or lazy.  No pages of talking heads saying nothing, no pages of lazy art stats...just good, well crafted stories with both action, drama and character development.

Those storylines (and others) demonstrated that there is a way to compress time so that only hours pass between what might be six issues without ripping off the customer.  I was out of breath after reading them; felt like I'd just gotten off of a rollercoaster at times.

Thinking about this sent me off to the Grand Comicbook Data Base, which produced these covers for my last year on UNCANNY…

Busy times!

After the mega-Dark Phoenix storyline you followed it up with back-to-back two-issue classics. Everyone's a winner.

Back to the commission... it's rather gruesome!

Love all the mechanical gumpf you can see being exposed from the sliced fingertips.

That cover gallery not only reveals how much story was packed into 12 issues but it also sadly recalls the lost art of comic book covers.

Is there any Marvel or DC series from the past year whose covers would tell you *anything* about what happened -- at a glance?

I always liked how the "X" and "N" in X-MEN 136 were "repaired" versions of those letters crushed by Dark Phoenix in 135.  Was that your suggestion, JB?

I was never fond of the cover to 142.... This, however, I love.  Congratulations to the commissioner!

I also agree with Stephen above: today, it's all about pinups, not about selling stories.

It was not! In fact, I thought it was quite silly. When I heard about it, I asked them not to do it, but I was ignored.

So many adventures in so little time!

It's hard to imagine how much the characters went through in "just" one year! These days, that much material would probably be "diluted" in 2 years or more...
