11" x 17" illo of Blackhawk either kneeling or exiting the cockpit of his Grumman Skyrocket

- close up of Blackhawk with the upper part of the cockpit visible.
- please have Blackhawk smiling, tipping his cap back; as if he just returned from a successful battle
- please, have the Blackhawk insignia showing (any "era" insignia you feel is appropriate)

Had to whip up a quick and dirty model of the Skyrocket to get the proportions right for the fly-over…

Just noticed some lingering eraser crumbs at upper right!

Very cool, JB!

I thought that this was interesting, I found it while looking up the Skyrocket.

I actually used the schematic from that page to build my model!

I have enjoyed your work since I was 10, and you've gotten better in every aspect with each year since. But, the way you draw the folding in clothing now really stands out as something you've mastered. It needs no color and is beautiful to look at in black and white. It is simple yet perfect.

Thanks! The Big Question on this one was How Much Black? Altho Blackhawk's uniform was clearly BLACK in his first story, it was BLUE on the cover, and blue quickly became the standard. When I first "met" the Blackhawks, as a kid, there was no doubt in my mind that their outfits were dark blue.

But if I left this one "open for color" it wouldn't work -- basically, far too much white space. So I started slipping in some heavy blacks, carefully, until I got what I hoped was a balance.

The folds in the uniform and reflections are astounding. My favorite aspect by far.

Very striking!

I like how bold the blacks are compared with the light and airiness of the background.
