I think JB mentioned that the alcoholism was added because Tony's original flaw (bad heart) had been resolved.

That being said -- I didn't read any Iron Man books before Demon in a Bottle -- so Tony has always been an alcoholic for me.

I did sort of "reMarvelize" the character. A handsome, billionaire playboy without a flaw sort of goes against the Marvel method, at least superficially.

I've always clung to the fact that at least he was drinking Canadian whiskey.-

You'd think he could afford some of the more top shelf stuff, seeing as how he was as rich as god and all...

That statue kind of makes him look like Clark Gable.

Demon in the Bottle was and is one of my favorite Iron Man issues, and that run is my favorite.

Again, I restate something I strongly believe, just becauuse later writers abuse this idea doesn't ruin this storyline.  Never measure the quality of one teams work by what someone else does with it, either for good or ill.  It's the same way, just because someone took an element from a weak story and wrote a great story with it, doesn't make the first story great.  It is still weak.

In his interview on the Iron Man DVD, Bob Layton says that the alcoholism element was at that point the "villain" for that storyline. It was a culmination of, as Layton says, looking at what would effect a billionaire playboy who had everything, and alcohol was seen as a major factor that could bring a man like Tony Stark down.

I wouldn't mind an Aquaman cradling his dead son as a furious grieving Mera leaves him while Black Manta laughs evilly in the background statue.

Also a new Hawkgirl #@#$ing Red Arrow and accidently saying Carter's name statue would be swell.

Or a Speedy prepping his vein for the smack statue.

Or maybe a female successor Mist chump-killing Amazing Man, Blue Devil, and Crimson Fox  in five seconds to prove that she was scary or something statue..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought it was said that the whole Alcoholism arc was meant to be a done-in-one kind of story, not meant to define the character or be revisited. It was Denny O'Neil that gave Stark another bender that lead to Rhodey taking over for a while.

I've never read this, and I don't plan on it!  Iron Man was only an Avenger to me.  I didn't really appreciate him until the movie.
