I like the original over the redone!

Obviously, Marvel doesn't think Kirby's art has as much
modern commercial appeal as a modern artist like Garney.
Far be it from me to argue with their crack team of market
researchers, but I think it highly likely that most fans
of Omnibuses featuring classic 60's Kirby material are big
Kirby fans and would love a high quality reproduction of
one of his most famous covers. Gasp!

I mean even a young fan who gets this probably has gotten
hooked or interested in the art of the period and wouldn't
mind the older stuff. Now I'm just being grumpy. I'm a Ron
Garney fan.

Can they really think that the new cover will drive sales over the original??

<sigh>

What is the point of redrawing a classic cover?
---

Variant covers are this moment's holofoil, polybagged comic.

The one time Marvel offered any type of variant that I actually enjoyed was when after Heroes Return came. Marvel offered "Director's Cut" versions of Avengers #1 and Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #1. The whole book was pencil pages with the script in the back. I would loved to have seen them do this for JB's X-Men: Hidden Years.

As far as the paper stock of the omnibus. I have the two Fantastic Four's and the Silver Surfer omnibi and they are sort of a semi gloss. They aren't as glossy as some of the current books but they aren't mat finish either.

Oh dear....I was recently telling my girlfriend (had to explain there would be no money for food or clothing for the children) that this was coming out, shame about the cover...I recently ordered the original X-men omnibus that came with the Alex Ross cover but much to my surprise it came with a Kirby cover!

What a queer thing to do.

It's like trying to sell candy wrapped in a manure-flavored wrapper.

That's Ron Garney?  I didn't recognize his work.  I guess it's been awhile since I saw anything by him.  I liked his Cap and Silver Surfer work back in the day...

I think Garney drew one of the best Cap's ever with this:

I'm convinced they do variants to confuse Moms into buying the same book twice.

I pre-ordered the Kirby version through DCBS. I like the Garney cover
quite a lot, but the Kirby cover reflects the material inside the book.

Garney remains one of my favorite Cap artists--alongside our esteemed
host, Kirby, Andy Kubert, the Buscemas, the Romitas, and Epting.
