I just finished reading that particular book.  Solid art, sometimes almost pretty.  Stories are good, but I would not say they are mature, a kid can easily enjoy them, but they are more serious.  Not a fun setting, by any means.  I enjoyed reading them.

It bothers me when people scoff at the Silver Age Marvel and DC classics but then insist that New Avengers is mature, whilst at the same time ignoring anything published by Drawn & Quarterly, Fantagraphics, Top Shelf Productions, Viz Signature etc.

If they want mature comics then look for some Will Eisner, Bryan Talbot or Posy Simmonds.

This thing about "mature audiences" really bugs me sometimes.  There was a time when some of the stuff you see being done in New Avengers or many of the other current books was done under the MA rated books like Epic Illustrated or Heavy Metal.  Now it's everywhere.

I keep thinking about the saying, "Let boys be boys."  It's almost like the generation that's out there right now is really embarrassed to be called "comicbook writers" and wants their profession to be portrayed as anything but.  That attitude in the current creative and editorial regimes is part of what keeps me away from comicbook titles these days.

I would still have gotten into Silver Age comics from the Code days, if I was 42 back in the day.  I still can.

Think about all the great books that don't have graphic sex or violence or profanity or obscenity in them -- The Lord of the Rings, Moby Dick, The Old Man and the Sea, The Great Gatsby...and so on, and so forth. I can think of great comics that certainly aren't for the very young (Journey, Next Men, Dysart and Ponticelli's Unknown Soldier, The Unwritten), but none of those four are titillating or sophomoric in any way. Maybe someone should start a comic line called Comics for Smart People of All Ages.

Cheers, Jon

I'm appalled at some of the content that gets published -- the Wasp and Yellowjacket sex scene being among the worst. The writer should have been fired on the spot when that script was submitted.  It was a perfect example of shock replacing story. I have no problem with mature stories, but they should be distinct from the vast majority of books that rightfully should be aimed at younger readers.

I think he's talking about the Wasp & Yellowjacket sex scene from Avengers #71 (vol. 3), written by Geoff Johns.

Quite a difference between that and the pornography of Geoff Johns' story, of course, but great of you to remember it! I really have to dig out some of those old comics.

Whatever happened to Geoff Johns? There was a point when he seemed to know what he was doing.

His Superman: Secret Origin is just an excuse to bastardize every element of Superman from comics, movies, cartoons and TV, and present it as "definitive".
