One fun fact about this piece: It now holds JB's record for most characters drawn in a single piece of art (as far as I know). The FF poster is in the low 60's -- I believe this one clocks in at 74 characters.

I hope this piece will hold the record for some years to come!

All kinds of Wow on this piece!!! I don't know which I love more about this piece, that it is inspired by the FF pin up from years back or that it features the characters from John's run on X-men! I started reading X-men during that run (issue 112 to be exact) and stayed with it for years after that! They are still among my favorite issues of the series ever! I proudly had the FF poster on my bedroom wall as a teenager and I would proudly hang a print of this X-men pin up on my wall now as an adult!

A wonderful 'adaptation' of my favorite piece of JB art, the FF "Family Portrait"!  The composition works brilliantly with the characters from his X-Men run.  What a terrific commission idea, Nathan!  Needless to say, JB knocked it out of the park.

As others have mentioned, the Avengers would be a natural pick for another run-specific "family portrait."  Not the team's full roster -- especially since Perez has already done that a couple of times, notably with his 30th Anniversary poster and the cover of Volume 3, No. 1.  Instead, JB's commission could include those members featured in JB's classic issues as Avengers artist in the 1970s (#164-166; 181-191), along with supporting characters and villains from same!

Of course, a ton of Avengers appeared in #181, so maybe the "roll call" syndrome is hard to avoid . . .

I'm really happy about the placement of the Watcher... that was part of my commission request. I thought it was a fun way to pay homage to the FF poster.

Great Comission!!!

This image has a profound effect on me. As my eye rolls over each

character all those stories flip through my mind's eye!

Very powerful art piece!

For me it was the time that started my JB fanaticism!

If my squinty eyes are reading correctly, I believe that the paper Aurora is holding up says "Bonjour  Nathan Je t'aime!" How saucy!

Is Iceman in this commission?  I can't find him if he is.  Just curious.  I'm using it as my new desktop, again a great commission!

••

As near as I can tell, Nathan's requirement for appearing in this piece was that a character must have actually participated in a story, which Bobby did not.

That's a good call, too, if my assumption is correct, as drawing EVERY character who appeared during my run would have more than doubled the count. Remember the flashback issue? Oy!

Corsair and The Star-Jammers?

••

About them, you will have to ask Nathan -- tho they certainly didn't have much to do in the one and only issue of my run (my first) in which they appeared.

(For myself -- I will admit I am glad to see them omitted from this assemblage, whether it was deliberate or Nathan merely forgot them. Shoehorning them into X-MEN took the book on its first step down a very wrong turn, one which I spent my time on the title working to get Chris away from. Scott Summers, a very ordinary guy, except for his burdensome super power -- in other words, a classic Marvel character of the period -- suddenly has parents who were kidnapped by space aliens, whose mother was made the mistress of a star emperor before being murdered by him, and whose father became a space pirate? Ugh!)

JB- Yup, I agree about not caring for Scott's space parents... and after just re-reading that issue (and agreeing the Star-Jammers do very little in that ish,) I have a question (that you've probably been asked loads already, sorry). . It was one of the reprints that added new pages (in this case the ret-conned first appearance of Dark Phoenix...) so how did you feel about these 'Special Editions'. I didn't like the extra bits, especially as the art quality drops so much as it vaguely attempts to imitate Byrne & Austin.

Hated 'em. Chris used them to jam in, retroactively, all the "bits" I'd said "no" to. (Which is not surprising, since his first dozen or so issues after I left the book were choc-a-bloc with all the bits I'd said "no" to. Doubly not surprising, since the Mesmero/circus issue was actually something Dave had said "no" to!)

Your comments about the Star-Jammers and Scott's dad, made me wonder: When did Havoc/Alex appear? Did Cyclops always have a mutant brother?
