I use a Canon MP510 printer for day-to-day stuff. Lately, the black has been dropping out, printing pale blue, or white with a pale blue border. I changed all the cartridges to no effect. Anyone have thoughts on this?

I've contacted the Canon Help center, but who knows how long a response could take!

Have you tried printing out a test sheet.

Sounds like the print-head might be on its way out. I've had a similar problem with an Epson in the past - tried changing the cartridges but to no avail. It turned out to be a print-head failure. Unfortunately this won't be of much help to you, in terms of getting the printer working again swiftly.

If you ultimately find yourself having to replace the printer, an HP model is recommended. HP's ink cartridges contain their own individual print-head, so this problem never arises (I've had three print-heads fail on my last three Epson printers, which is why I switched to HP).

Since I've tried everything the manual recommends, plus everything I could find on help lines, I fear you may be right.

Try cleaning the cartridge heads with some lint free cloth with some cleaning fluid added.

My printer HP has the auto-cleaning option, when I have got
that issue the autocleaning repairs it, maybe Canon has a
similar function in preferences but I'm not sure if it has.

Thanks for the input! Proving invaluable, since the links to responses
FixYa.com has sent me don't seem to work, so I can't actually read any of
them!

It's a sad fact, but these things are built to fall apart. I'm reasonably sure
that companies like Canon and Epson treat their printers as loss-leaders,
really just as a way to make you buy the ink. Which is INSANELY expensive.
The last four computers I bought all came with a free printer, and by the
last purchase, I found myself wondering what the hell I was going to do
with another printer - and then the previous printer broke down, and I was
relieved...

Its called Razor Blade economics - every time we need new ink cartridges,
my girlfriend, who has a Masters in economics, asks me if I remember what
the name for this kind of economics is and I always make up a name to
tease her, like shaving cream or ionic toothbrush economics.

Well, I bought a new one -- an HP this time. Beautiful little unit, tho that shiny black is going to be a mosaic of fingerprints pretty fast! Already appreciate the fact that it doesn't take a year and a half to set itself up every time I want to print something!

HPs have never failed me.  They seem to do pretty good on ink usage too.
