The recent sketch you did of Cyclops took me back to the very fist time I ever saw Cyclops and the X-Men in the back of a Captain America comic.  It was a subscription ad and I'm 99% sure it was Dave Cockrum artwork.

Your Kitty Pryde sketch got me to thinking though:

Is the material of the school uniform different from Cyclops' "costume"?  I assume that it is based on your(and Neal Adams, etc.) interpretation of the various X-Men costumes but I always thought that Cyclops in particular had on a just slightly modified school uniform?

I mainly bring this up because I've always been a fan of your "blackout" material for costumes like Wonder Man or Lex Luthor's suit where there aren't any highlights at all.  Which brings me back to Cockrum's version which I think falls somewhere in between your current style of Cyclops and the blackout material.

Comparing the UXM and XMHY art it doesn't seem that there is really much of a difference in style but I think that the material keeps slipping farther and farther away from the subtle highlights that is most appealing to me.

So, does Cyclops wear the same material(in a different design of course) as Kitty?  If not, is it supposed to be like a patent leather(shiny)?

In my mind, the middle one is where it "should" be:

The only difference is artistic license.

Would you consider the material in Kitty's outfit the same as Cyclops'?

Cool, thanks.  I kinda thought that was the case based on the old Comic Reader cover you did with the new X-Men wearing the old uniforms.

Alan Davis re-introduced the costumes during his last X-men run. I
think Storm and Nightcrawler look kinda cool in them (they wore them
while training in the Danger Room).

Hm. Big fan of Alan's work, as I am sure most of you know by now -- but training in clothes other than those you will wear into battle seems potentially dangerous. Military folk exercise in shorts and t-shirts and the like, but they train in uniform.

Agreed, Andy. I think all three versions look just fine. The first one has
great detail, and the darkness of the last figure tugs at my eye, but the
middle one "feels" the most "right" to me.

I'll bet, if you go thru my old X-MEN work, you will find me drawing Cyclops in all three of those ways, panel to panel, depending on the demands of the drawing.

It's in the "Would this give ideas to Marvel?" thread about page 15 I think.

JB: I remember an interview with Klaus Jansen a long time ago in which he
described inking a desk in a particularly heavy scene to "look heavy."
Although I can't really put my finger specific examples*, I've always thought
of you as using costumes in a similar, expressionist way. I wonder if this is a
conscious thing, and if you can think of any examples in your work.

*The only little thing I can think of -- Wolverine has negative eyes the vast
majority of the time, but there's a little hint of pupil in particularly intense
scenes.
