I was only able to do a skim through before putting it in my LCS pull-box, but I really liked what I saw...  Especially the antagonists (you can never have enough of them)!

It's kind of interesting to see all the top notch reviews for JB's recent licensed
work which seem to have at least a slightly different audience than the
regular comic fanboys. Apparently no-one told the fans of Trek and Angel
that you are supposed to hate JB's work--sight unseen even. The books are
being judged more on their own merits and not through any "Byrne's an
orgre" lens.

••

I've been thinking that since the first ROMULANS scored such high marks.
Certainly puts an interesting perspective on things, doesn't it?

JB, why the "not intended for children under 13" warning on the cover?

Beats me! I didn't even know it was there.

I suppose, tho, in this modern world, TOS would be PG-13, so. . .

I've never watched a full episode of Star Trek. I haven't seen an entire Star Trek movie. I'm on this ride because the comic is written and drawn by JB. I have read JB's other IDW comics -- that is the only knowledge I have of this universe (I also share my birthday with William Shatner -- but I don't think that will help me here!)

The found the first issue of Crew fun -- the acting is fantastic. I liked the pace of the book. Does the Star Trek crew only fight Klingons? I guess I'm used to the FF -- the skrulls show up from time to time, but there's a million other creatures out there. There might be a neat story where the crew blame the Klingons for a threat -- but it turns out to be someone else. Anyways...

So there was one thing that completely lost me. The main character is never named. I had a hard time connecting with her because of that. I kept rereading pages looking for her name. There might be a big reveal coming up...? I'm not reading the other comments on this site (on any site) because I want to figure this book out on my own. I'll keep reading the series -- maybe I'm getting too antsy... maybe this unnamed character thing is going somewhere and I need to sit tight! I just feel like I'm missing a big piece of the story or something...

I look forward to the next issue, JB! Like I said, it is a fun comic! When the series is over -- I'll revisit these threads and read the comments. Until then -- see you next month.

PS - Anyone can comment on the post I made. The questions I have are not strictly for JB to answer. Thanks!

++++++++++

The main character in CREW appeared as second-in-command of the Enterprise in the original, rejected STAR TREK pilot episode, "The Cage". Known only as "Number One" (a nickname for the position of First Officer), her name was never revealed, and would presumably never have been revealed, had the character appeared in the series proper.

JB has stated his intent to not give Number One a name in CREW, thus staying consistent with Gene Roddenberry's notion for the character. The mini-series depicts her career aboard different ships, with the last few issues focusing on her early days aboard the Enterprise.

You really should watch the original pilot to fully appreciate this series. It is available in its original form, as well as in the 2-part version aired during the first season of the series--"The Menagerie". The two-parter used new wrap-around footage of the series' stars (Kirk, Spock, etc.) to present the failed pilot as flashback material (thus allowing the expensive pilot to not go to waste).

CBS has "The Menagerie" officially available online for free at YouTube, along with most of the first season. "The Cage" is also available (not from CBS) on YouTube, broken up into mulitple parts.

Feel free to give her a name in your own head, Nathan. In scripting dialog
cues, I'm calling her "Majel".

I hadn't actually noticed that. I remember you stating previously that she wouldn't have a name. I was enjoying the story so much it didn't occur to me.

I didn't know she was to become Number One. Interesting.

I loved this issue!

In just a few dialogue lines JB gets me inside the head of the Admiral!

I really empathized with his character. How many of us have been overlooked or passed by in certain situations? Whether it is a game of dodge ball or a job, but due to bad timing an opportunity is missed? Yet YOU BUT ONLY YOU know deep down that not only do you have the ability you know you could have excelled if given the chance!

The scene with the Admiral really hit home with me.

I was behind him astrally in that cockpit saying 'floor it!' because it doesn't matter now, nothing matters except this one last opportunity TO SUCCEED!

Hell yeah.

Loved it! Read this and Angel #1 last night. Enjoyed the art on Angel but preferred the story on Crew.

Like Nathan I was initially stumped on who she was, then I remembered the credit at the front of the book and put two and two together. Wonderful stuff as I remember liking Number One from the one time I saw the pilot.

Loved the interlude with the guy tranported into the ground which I guess is what is being referenced on the first page: "three days ago".

I like how you dream up the clothes and devices that people have in this era.

Really can't wait to read more and I actually didn't think I would care much for this series. Bravo, JB.

Further on the "nameless" nature of our heroine…

When I first set myself this "challenge", to get thru all 5 issues of CREW
without giving her a name, it felt a wee bit daunting. I would have her rank
to fall back on, of course, but she would be ending up in plenty of
conversations with people who would not call her "ensign" or "lieutentant" -
- not exclusively anyway.

But in the back of my mind was something I heard a few years back. I don't
recall who the actor was, but she was talking about the very UNnatural way
in which script writers pepper their dialog with people's names. She cited
one script page on a recent project in which her character was addressed by
name, by the same person, ten times. On a single page. In the real world,
we just don't do that. A salutation, or to focus on someone in a group
discussion, is about as often as we call each other by name in casual
conversation.

So, I applied this "naturalist" approach to the dialog in CREW -- very much
at odds with the "You shall not live to regret this, Reed Richards!" manner in
which my years at Marvel and DC have taught me to write. Taking this
approach, it suddenly became very easy to not call her by name. In fact,
after the first issue, it became much more "natural" than calling her by
name.

Which doesn't mean I haven't had to be "cute" a few times!

I'm not sure I would even have not noticed she had no name if not for the "everyone here will remember your name" line followed up by "signing your name inside?". :)

Just read it.  Loved it.  STAR TREK: Assignment Earth quickly rose to a place among my all-time favorites works by JB and CREW is off to an even better start!

Thanks JB!  Keep working on these projects that allow you to have fun!

Loved every panel, JB.  Thanks.

JB, with all this business about names in mind, why did you have "Majel" address Griggs by name 3 times on the first page?  (Not a dig or anything, I swear - just curious about writer's intent - if this was for contrast, distraction, a hint at her character or their relationship, something else, etc.)

Thanks again!  Can't wait for more.

I was trying to get across her exasperation with him. I wanted a sense that
he was (gently) poking her a bit, and she wasn't happy about it.

I enjoyed the teasing around with Cadet's name. "We'll never forget your name", "I am going to sign my name", etc. :]

Very enjoyable. I liked the panel showing the deflectors working and thought the laser colouring was very effective because the colourist resisted the temptation to go overboard in the rest of the issue.

I loved the fact that her name is not revealed during the pilot or this issue.  Very enjoyable. It's similar to The Time Machine, our hero is not named in that story.

I loved it. I especially liked the images of Engineering, hearkening back to early 1st season TOS episodes.

In my mind, her last name is Hudec. Greg Kirkman and JB should get that one.
