TRIPLE CROSS (1967)

WW2 espionage thriller, softened considerably by the passage of the years. Like so many movies of this vintage, too clean and well lit, with anachronistic fashions abounding.

JOKER (2019)

So....... it’s all in his head, right? That’s what the clocks are about.

IT: CHAPTER TWO (2019)

In some ways, sloppier and more uneven than "Chapter One," but in a lot of other ways, funnier, scarier and more poignant.  And ultimately, a better, stronger film than the first part.

And after 40+ years of Stephen King movies, both IT movies, taken together, are two of the best.  Given the grim horror material, and putting kids in jeopardy, the fimmakers have gone out of their way to actually make these movies as fun as possible, too.

MAKING APES (2020)

Comprehensive documentary on the history of the PLANET OF THE APES franchise. Concentration on the first (and best!) but with plenty of attention given to what followed. A fascinating history, too, of the evolution of prosthetic makeups.

NIGHT TIDE (1961)

Curious mystery that may or may not be supernatural, with a beatnik/Roger Corman feel. Not entirely successful (there’s a plot hole that left me thinking “hey, what about...?” at the end), but it looks great on the restored blu-ray.

PRISONERS (2013)

Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal in a fairly tight suspense story. Edits so obvious “this happens next” scenes are mostly missing. Kind of refreshing to have a movie allow for some brains in the audience.

1990 High School Senior Year Horror Double Feature:

Clive Barker's NIGHTBREED
and
LEATHERFACE: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III

These were never meant to be revisited!  My two best high school buddies at the time would have pushed for these, back in January/February 1990... one swore by all things Clive Barker, the other was obsessed with "Fangoria" and slasher flicks...

I tried giving them the ol' Netflix rental spin just for any potential fun, but I couldn't get through either of them.  NIGHTBREED helped underscore what I never liked about Barker--his movies and stories tend to be far too outlandish to ever be believable for even a second--and this was loaded with too many silly make-up jobs to be taken seriously.

And LEATHERFACE was just grisly junk.

30 years later, no need to ever revisit again!

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), but just the good parts, skipping the Red Skull/Hydra stuff, so works out to be about 30 minutes, all in the first 45 minutes.

I desperately wanted to love THE FIRST AVENGER... and there are so many parts that they get right (not the least of which is Chris Evans' casting)...

And yet so many others they get wrong (adult Bucky; Howling Commandos minus Nick Fury; a literal red skull; dumping on the classic Cap costume; and blue laser guns during WWII)...

The whole is painfully mediocre to me, and one of my least favorite of the MCU films.

Father & son weeknight pick:

THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING (2019)

A favorite of both of ours from last year... a fun, charming, earnest kids adventure.  Good cast, good effects, good score... a pleasant modern addition to the tales of King Arthur, Merlin and Excalibur.

Criminally underrated, and is bound to be an all-around childhood favorite of my son's, when he looks back on his pre-teen years, someday.

Really worth checking out, if anyone is so inclined.
