Having read both the issues &, later on, the stories about Vince Colleta & the "shortcuts" his inks took on Jack Kirby at DC, my main feelings towards him were that the stuff of his I had read were true to his general reputation (while at the same time reading enough articles & the likes that made it clear that the man really could ink.. & ink well.. But was a "go-to-guy" & that had lead to his hack label), & over the years, other bits 'n bobs I've read that have been inked by him have kept my opinion...
Until today, when going through some of my old pile of favourite issues from childhood & for the very FIRST TIME, I spotted that Vince Colleta inked JB on Spectacular Spider-Man #58.. Which, outside of JRJR, Romita Sr & Ditko's versions might be my all time favourite Spider-Man comic book rendition...
I mean, in my opinion, the inks actually really really compliment JB on that book.
Is it just me? I mean the art on that book is STUNNING.

Robbie,
I don't have that issue; any chance of some interior scans, maybe pages and/or panels you particularly loved (and a few that didn't) for us to look at?
Thanks!

At Shooter's instruction, Vinnie redrew a lot in that issue. Especially the
female faces.

I didn't read again this comic for many years but I have some good
memories of it despite the goofy bad guy. Also, I had totally forgotten that
Colletta inked it. He must have done a pretty honest job or I would definitely
remember him.

Robbie,
Given this new information, you might have to reassess your love of Colletta's "inks" on this issue... since they might be outright redrawings and NOT actually just his inks over JB's pencils.

JB - Why did Shooter do that? I'm looking at it again now &a lot of the Spider-Man & Parker at least looks distinctively yours.. as does the incredible action sequences with the Ringer.. But I can see panels where Debra & Marcy Kane indeed like "un-Byrne" in comparison to a lot of the book.
Marc me ol' mucker! I'd love to scan it & stuff, but I've no scanner at home sadly - 'tis a shame because I think it'd make an interesting "reading club" curio too mate!

We Italians are deeply attached to that story... it was published in the first issue of our current Spider-Man series 21 years ago!
And it surely was one of the best in that moment...! I always hoped to see the Stern/Byrne team again on Spider-Man. Unfortunately, the inks were the weakest part of the book. Story? Good. Artwork? Good. Inks? Colletta. He ruined almost every face drawn by JB! Spider-Man in his costume was probably the only thing still good after the Colletta treatment.
Don't ask where the water tank is...!

The blacks on the Italian cover make the image look better.

On the top cover, I guess the problem is the same as with a lot of other American comics of the past, that the black plate doesn't get printed on top (or last) I hate it when the colour shows up over the black like that. We don't normally have that problem in Norwegian reprints either.

This issue and JB's art was the reason I had Geof include Ringer as Spidey's most wanted!

Geof Isherwood! I wondered what he was doing!
I fondly remember his run on DR. STRANGE, SORCERER SUPREME with Len Kaminski... it was the firts Marvel series I picked after years!

I always had mixed feelings about Colletta's reputation. Until I'd read more about it, I wondered why some of his stuff was really nice and some... well... wasn't.
This, for me.... wasn't. Hated the faces (and now I know why). and the whole thing just seemed... mushy. One of the things I always liked about JB's work... and still do... is a certain "preciseness" about it. I prefer the inkers who keep tha vs the few who kind of soften everything
