He wouldn't be doing it if there was not a market for it.

THAT is the real problem.

I believe that a call from JB's attorney as well as the copyright holders of the original artwork Kryssing has stolen from would not be out of order.  That's just outright intellectual theft described in a very murky, misleading manner.

I guess the reason I'm angry is that I was looking at eBay art auctions, and saw my Iron man commission (itself a Kirby tribute and stated so on the art).
Here it was, for $25, by some no-name, with absolutely no mention of Bob Layton or Jack Kirby.
It pissed me off.
and then I looked at the other auctions, and saw that this Ray had downloaded jpegs from Layton's website , and copied a batch of Iron man commissions to cash in on the movie.
Non of these with Layton's name mentioned.

I emailed Layton, and I tried to see if I could file anything with eBay. no luck. So I thought I'd vent here, which made me look at the website....
Yikes.
Look, if this is the game you want to play, make 100% sure that you name the artists you're copying.
And be prepared for backlash from the collectors, and the artists...
It's odd, the notion of these commission recreations.
For $25, you can by a recreation from a no-name swiper. For $150, you can have the real thing (in the case of Layton).

It's not like a recreation of a classic Kirby cover. If you could justify that, it would possibly be a recreration of art that's worth thousands, or possibly destroyed. Most of us could never own it, so a recreation by a no name artist (or even a name artist, or even the original artist) might be cool (if that's your thing).
But many of Ray's copies are newer commissions from artists trying to make a living doing these commissions. It seems like bottom-feeding, leeching off of name artists...
"Look, Byrne did another commission, let's copy it and sell it for $100!" It's like knock-off products you can get on the streets...
It's just so damn sad to see someone wasting their time on these, as well as people buying them.
And if the artist is even close to misleading the collector as to where the image originated, well, shame on them.

I'm not so sure. He's not actually representing the art as my work (or
anyone's other than his own). And while this is distinctly disreputable, it's
very much caveat emptor.

I see no problem with this as long as the buyer knows it's a copy. When you
think about it -- when you buy a comic book you're only buying a "copy" of
the original art -- so what's the difference here?

••

The comicbook is produced to be sold. Private commissions (which are
being copied here) are not.

JB, how is what Kryssing doing different from someone printing T-shirts using a one of your commissioned images without permission?

I must say he does some nice work, but not crediting the original art team or acknowledging copyrights is a definite faux pas.

I wouldn't say that he does nice work; I would say that he's a good mimic.  Big difference.

There is a lot of skill in reproducing those lines.  It's not as easy as it looks.

In the about us, he does claim to have worked with JB and others...

http://www.inkspotcomicart.com/about_us.asp

I think you can infer he's at least trying to deceive people into thinking he inked these versions of JB's and other's work.
