Jeff,

Legally speaking, there is no difference, but the companies don't seem to have a problem with pros who do commission pieces using their characters.  It is an odd understanding as the companies seem to be leaving a lot of money on the table by not organizing the commission market.  Perhaps, they feel that such a move would hurt their working relationship with the talent?

The poster leaves the strong implication that DC is a part of the benefit.
