I'm sure they've been mentioned here before (tho not in this thread), but I was a shocked to see the obvious swipes in MacFarlane's early Incredible Hulk work from JB's earlier run.
Appropriately, I'd like someone else to post scans as examples. I don't feel like doing the work myself.

There is world of difference between a swipe (in which you convert another persons art into your own) and an Homage in which a particular design or pose(typically a cover) is reused in a new way.

A homage is sort of like the equivalent of a cover song. A swipe is sampling a song without getting permission and/or giving credit.

the cover penciller on the Jonah Hex cover was Neal Adams,who also did the Superman cover , just a different inker

It bothers me that there seems to be a witchhunt to track down 'swipes', which are usually not even the case. I find it petty and borderline slanderous most of the time, by folk with waay too much time on their hands.
Drawing from reference, without tracing or slavishly following the source, shouldn't be considered a swipe, IMO.
I feel that so-called 'fans' who savagely critique artistic 'errors' are partially to blame for driving some artists to feel obliged to rely too heavily on photographic reference.

I noticed a not-so-bright negative comment on one of those "swipe" pages:
John Byrne did SIX of those swipes. Six swipes of the same cover. Wow, man.
Umm ... close to half of the accused "swipes" were for FF-related comics, and the original cover was for FF #1. Does this guy really think that JB was trying to pull something? That the multiple uses of the same pose were not transparent homages to the original FF #1 cover? A cover by Kirby, who JB acknowledges as a master every chance he gets? Sheesh.

People need to realize a difference between swipes and just using the same material. Swiping is when you are lazy, stealing a pose or image, and hoping people don't notice. Liefeld's X-Force pages that were exactly the same as Teen Titans pages spring to mind. JB repeatedly using FF#1 cover as an inspiration is not a swipe. Using a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 is not a swipe. All those Justice League covers that were copies of JLI #1 aren't swipes, they're having fun with the same image concept.
I agree with JB, I think Paolo had the perfect analogy. Vanilla Ice was swiping, people redoing old songs are not.

This is what I've said before, about fans who try to use the terminology and get it wrong. Those FF covers were not swipes. Not by any definition. There was a cover I did for AMAZING HEROES with myself substituting for the monster, and the FF themselves in the same positions they were on the cover of FF 1 -- that was about as close to a swipe as you can get, in terms of my versions of that cover.But, this isn't really about accuracy of terminology, anyway. This is about trying to tar me with the same brush that can be rightly used on others, to defend those others. "See! Byrne does it, too!" And since truth is not a valued commodity on the internet, off we go!

The thing I find most insulting, when I am erroneously accused of "swiping",
is that I AM A BETTER ARTIST THAN THAT! If I swipe something, it will
damn well look like what I am swiping, not something in roughly the same
neighborhood.
