I know that JB designed the all red Doc Samson costume, but do any of you know who designed the original?

I've always liked it, even though it doesn't really have much to do with the character. (I am a sucker for lightning bolts... all the Flashes and Captain Marvel are faves of mine...)

Beyond the question of who designed it,  any thoughts on why Doc Samson would choose to wear that outfit? Maybe he was a big Captain Marvel fan, too?

I was always a fan of Doc Samson from the old UK reprints of The Hulk. In later life I have always thought of Doc Samson as one of the few heroes who a costume is not essential. If you turned up to a psychiatric evaluation and the doctor was wearing a red jersey with a lightning bolt across the chest you would worry for your own sanity and that of the doctor. Since many of th good doctors appearances have been in the capacity of a shrink than that of a super hero I think that a non costumed appearance is not unexpected. The counter argument to this would be that a costume is a greater way of connecting with your clients if most of them are costumed heroes or villians anyway.

For ages, I thought the character and costume was based on the golden-age hero Doc Strange. From the name, both were t-shirt heroes, both had unique hair. But I read a year or so ago, that the costume was based on Captain Tootsie!

Doc Strange developed a serum from "distilled atoms from the sun" that
gave him super-strength, invulnerability, and later the abilty to fly. Alan
Moore's Tom Strong is based partially on him.

Captain Tootsie was a hero used to advertise Tootsie Rolls, appearing in
little adventure strips in various comics of the time and eventually
graduating to a few issues of his own comic. He got fighting ability from
eating Tootsie Rolls which he kept a supply of in his little man-purse.
Developed by C.C. Beck of Captain Marvel fame.

Doc Samson's original outfit is awesome.. I had thought that his look was meant to be a generic superhero costume and he also resembled a pro wrestler.  The lightning bolt motif was pretty common in costumes designed at that time.. Thundra, Adam Warlock,etc... no reason for the lightning bolt, just a good visual shorthand for Super Hero!

For the life of me I'm trying to picture the Doc's original outfit and all I can
see is JB's red vest version.

I never made the connection between Doc Samson and the biblical character.
