…that's pre-Starlin Mar-Vell right?

••

Yes, that's my preferred vintage on the good Captain, and Christos was kind
enough to indulge me.

I never read any of the Avengers comics. It was never a book that made it into my budget as a young boy and when I was buying comics as an adult I never picked up the Avengers. Seeing these three commissions make me wish there was at least some 30+ issue run of Avengers penciled and inked by JB that I could go pick up.

What an excellent piece! JB draws a great Thanos.

JB, what did you think to Jim Starlin's runs on Captain Marvel and Warlock?

Hey, guess who's got a new wallpaper on his laptop? ME!

That may be my favorite all time Byrne piece. Thanos sure looks like he's having a good time.

BTW, those other two Avengers pieces, Nefaria and Ultron, made me consciously notice something that I often take for granted; JB does really good backgrounds.

JB, what is the background/foreground time ratio on pieces like Nefaria and Ultron?

VERY nice, love the dark inking on Cap. You can actually display this one
either horizontally or vertically, and it works either way!

While most people give credit to Gil Kane for the redesign, this look actually debuted at the end of Captain Marvel #16, which was drawn by Dashing Don Heck.

Kane did tweak the mask a bit when he took over in issue #17, and they added the Nega-Bands at the end of that issue.

Two things Starlin did to Mar-Vell's appearance that I didn't really like - he changed his hair from silver to blond [I thought the silver made him much more distinctive] and he also changed the mask back to the way Heck had drawn it, which also detracted from the uniqueness of his look.

That said, I think this is one of the best [if not *the* best] character redesigns ever.  right there with Wally Wood's Daredevil and the new versions of the Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman and Atom by DC at the beginning of the Silver Age.

BTW - This is easily one of my favorite JB commissions.  As mentioned above, the inking on Captain America is really well done.

The only thing that could have improved this one in my eyes would be the addition of  a certain bowman.....

I think you need a fourth piece now, Christos -- with the gang sitting and lying around the Mansion while Jarvis serves them lemonade!

I can see it now... most are looking pretty exhausted (except Cap, Vision and Thor, natch)... maybe have the ones who didn't make it to all three commissions looking injured...

Gotta admit Christos, after the week you just gave them, the Avengers could USE a break. :-)

JB, have you ever drawn Mar-Vell in his original Kree uniform?

••

Backgrounds and figures timed out about the same on those two. Lots of
line work in the Ultron piece, lots of black (time consuming) in the
Nefaria piece.

Not that I recall.   (See -- I have finally smartened up! I don't say "No"
any more! I say "No" and suddenly there are fifteen posts showing me
the opposite!)
