I completely missed this run during my time. What's the Forum's opinion on the Ron Frenz issues, with Joe Sinnott and Al Milgrom inking, from like 387-459?
It's merely that I'm shocked I never ran across these issues, and while looking at Thor covers I discovered these beautiful retro looks, and am now thoroughly intrigued?

The handful of issues I read has some great Kirbyesque splash pages.
I suppose it could be argued that Ron Frenz went too far down the Imitation Kirby route while on Thor. Considering his Spider-Man work (which I adore) was very Ditko influenced though, it does say a lot about what an adaptable artist he is.

I loved the first year of issues Ron Frenz did on Thor, since he was still pretty much using the same style he used during his Amazing Spider-Man run, but he slowly kind of started to morph into more of a Jack Kirby style, and I wasn't so crazy about that. Besides, after writer Tom DeFalco's first big storyarc, I think he kind of ran out of steam. The replacement Thor issues later on really stunk, in my opinion.

With those Frenz issues, I saw more Buscema (Sal more than John) influence that Kirby, and the "Kirby" I saw was probably really Sinnott's inking. Good stuff though. Old school Marvel, which is a good thing.

I think Frenz had a nice Kirby style when Sinnott inked him on Thor. But the Breeding and Milgrom stuff weren't as Kirby looking. Chad, I think the DeFalco/Frenz Thor run was a pretty good read.
Cheap plug: I have a few pages of that Thor run displayed here. http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryRoom.asp?GSub=43138
There is one inked by Milgrom, Breeding and Sinnott, so far.

Ron did a bang-up job, tho I confess a preference for
his Spider-Man.

Well if you're just talking art, it was pretty good on the whole. Storywise I think the run got worse at it wore on. I remember dropping the title after awhile.

Frenz's faces in particular during this Thor run made me think of Buscema...

I found quite a few of those issues fun to read. I liked Sinnott's inking better than Breeding's. Milgrom's inking was pretty good, too. Overall, I wasn't a fan of Eric Masterson as Thor (later to adopt the identity of Thunderstrike, who got his own title and later died), but otherwise pretty good. One memorable issue is where Thor takes a hit (or 10) to help out Hercules.

That's Thor wearing the remnants of his Simonson battle armor.

Thanks Paulo! I've never read the Simonson run, so I would not know that!
