Hey, just got my Hulk DVD Rom yesterday and am curious as to which issues
should go immediately on the "must read" list. Naturally I went to the Byrne
issues first (most of which I already own anyway...) and I've read the Kirby
issues in the past.

So, what else to read?

I've been jumping around to the Hulk vs. Monsters on mine James, such greats are Wendigo, Glob, Swamp-Thing etc. I like the creepy monster tales.

Aside from the Stan Lee stuff and JB issues, you can't go wrong if you read
the entire Len Wein run, the entire Roger Stern run, the first half of the Bill
Mantlo run, and all the Peter David issues up to around #420.

From absolute best to wonderful:

Issue 227 by Stern and Buscema, "The Murder of Doctor Banner!" Doc Samson psychoanalyzes the Hulk.

Issues 235-237 by Stern and Buscema, the three-issue rumble with Machine Man.

Issues 239-242 by Stern and Buscema, the revelation of "They" and why they've been after the Hulk, and the mind behind it all. Plus the Gold Bug action!

Issue 250, by Mantlo and Buscema, the Surfer tries to use the Hulk's power to shatter the invisible barrier around Earth.

Issues 364-367, "Countdown" by David and a dude named Jeff Purves, and Keown shows up. The Hulk is poisoned by one of his enemies. During the course of his "investigation", the Hulk fights the Abomination, the FF (minus Ben, with She-Hulk in there, ugh), the Leader and others.

Issues 299-300, by Mantlo and Buscema and Taloac, the mindless Hulk becomes a threat that cannot be stopped, including one of the premier fights between Thor and the Hulk (I'm sure it has even more impact having read a year's worth of Hulk with Bruce Banner's brain stories up to then).

For me the gold standard has always been Mantlo/ Buscema.  The run from #292-#300 where Banner slowly loses control of the Hulk is an all-time favorite.

Cool, I just got done reading the issues after JB's run (been curious how that
turned out, what got the Hulk and Bruce to merge back together).

I'm always up for some Roger Stern action and I like Sal's take on the Hulk,
so maybe I'll tackle that next.

I liked the sotryline from the late 70s (I think) when Hulk got shrunk and ended up on a world where everyone was Green skinned.  If I recall he had Banner's brain on this world and fell in love with a blonde haired green skinned chick called Jarella (spelling).   Romance, Drama, Action and Tragedy -- who could ask for more from a Hulk story.

Not to sleep on the Len Wein/Sal Buscema stuff, because that's where my first Hulk issues came from.

I was wondering, if you all had to pick one issue, either in the Hulk's own title or other mags, as your favorite Hulk story, what would it be?

This is my favorite Hulk comic, I believe:

Kirby version of the Hulk, in this issue, with the Hulk in full "thug" mode, plus the intro of whom I'd say was the Hulk's true mortal enemy, Tyrannus (it's the duality/mirror thing, with the "Monster" exterior of the Hulk and the "Beautiful" Tyrannus who is so much more a monster than the Hulk ever could be. Great artwork, and for some reason the Hulk's love for Betty really comes through, as he endures prisoner degradation to keep her safe.

This is one of my top 5 favorites, I'd have to really think about to pick my all-time favorite.

I'm with Gary on this one.  Honestly, I enjoy just about every era of Hulk comics.  Sal Buscema is my favorite Hulk artist and I think every issue he worked on is enjoyable.  You can't go wrong with Kirby, Trimpe, Byrne and a whole bunch of others either.  I enjoyed a lot of Peter David's work on the title up until around issue 400 or so.

Well, my favorite issue featuring the Hulk is this...

But from the Hulk's own book...

I love everyting about this perfect, but all too short, Hulk run. This single
issue is the best-- the only guy missing is Thor!

Runners Up...

I reread this one over and over as a kid, loved the dialogue.

My favorite supporting character of all time, Doc Samson!

And another I loved as a kid. Dale Keown's finest hour, IMHO.
