As I've mentioned before, that cover and that issue made me a lifelong comic book fan.  I was still a few months away from discovering the majority of Marvel's heroes by way of Secret Wars, so I had no idea who any of these characters were or that they might resemble others.  I had only read GI Joe and Star Wars comics up to this point.

Oh, how I fought for that cover! First, by definining Spider-Man's outline strictly with negative space, it broke Shooter's black-on-black embargo. Then, the colorist wanted to fill up the windows with yellow and blue and maybe some red over here. The garishly colored logo, I maintain to this day, is both camps having their "revenge".

*******

Interesting that both the Spider-Man and Alpha Flight black and white covers have the same yellow/orange coloring in their logos.

I hate to go for one so obvious, but my favourite is Uncanny X-Men #141.

The cover to "Alpha Flight" #12 was also another cool cover (and one that I believe has been swiped a time or two by other artists).

Well, it's somewhere between these two:

One of the best all-time Hulk images, up against Superman against a brilliant night sky and a battle-hungry Hawkman. These are unsurpassable, from JB, so far.

If you were asked to re-imagine or re-create that cover today, do you think you'd use the pens you're favoring today, or would you break out the old brush and bottle of ink?

I'd definitely use a PITT pen for the outlining, but for that much black I'd probably break out the brushes.
