Fuzz box!  I was "sorta" right.  Didn't remember the bit about "The Fountain of Salmacis" - I do know that Steve came up with the soaring guitar solo over the ending portion.

I do have that book.  Haven't read it in years; maybe it's time.  The story of Phil's audition is one of my favorite music anecdotes.

I hadn't read it in years either.

What was fun to read (besides Phils audition) was that Steve was not a professional when he joined the band. It wasn't until Foxtrot that he started to feel comfortable within the band. Selling England was the album where he felt like he was starting to really contribute.

The thing that impressed the band the most though, was the way Steve played the guitar. He didn't so much follow along with the melody, but would go off on little solos that complimented what the others were doing.

His "soaring" guitar and the way he seems to "squeeze" the notes out, are for me what define his sound.

Amen.  He almost played like a drummer at times - slip in, dot the "i"s and cross the "t"s and get out.

My edition of the Armado Gallo book has pictures from the Mama Tour - that's the last edition I know of. It is indeed a wonderful book, altho my binding on it was problematic. Maybe I just read it too much!

Same problem with the binding for the Gallo.  And it must be "catching" - my booklet for the first box set ALSO had shoddy binding!

Genesis is just too big to be contained by mere binding!

The only thing holding my Gallo book together is the stitching, otherwise it would be completely apart.

I try not to look at the booklet in the first box set too closely, it feels like it just may fall apart.

I used to be in a mailing list type thing where Genesis was discussed and of course a big topic was Pete versus Phil on Pete's songs.  I almost always preferred Phil on material from The Lamb although I never put it that way - because it only recently occurred to me why.  There's an eternal struggle to define art vs. entertainment and I think a key is that album.  When Peter sang it, it was art - everything was of a piece with an overall theme and narrative to be carried by Pete's performance, not to mention the multimedia live presentation.  When Phil sang it he was able to access an Ethel Merman-ish "belt it out" style that fit the performance.  In other words, Pete was selling the whole show, while Phil was able to make it a greatest-hits review.

All of which brings me to "The Carpet Crawlers".  Phil does an okay job, although his almost paranoid "In The Cage" works much better.  But if you're on the fence on what the best song is on The Lamb, SING "The Carpet Crawlers" along with Pete.  It's his masterpiece.

I hope this doesn't come across in a stoner "Have you ever REALLY looked at your hand, man?" kind of way, but I was listening to the song when I thought of making my list and I was really startled by how touched I was at the time.  I mean, I've heard that song a bajillion times with some small fondness, but it was like I finally "got it" today.

edit: How sad is it that I'm editing a post from TWO MONTHS ago over a missed capital letter?
