I have a great DVD of Eric Clapton's "Live at Montreax
1986" - Collins was his producer for a few albums and
served as tour drummer. The DVD includes "In the Air
Tonight" - Collins does the vocals sitting behind the drum
kit and at the end of the song he pops down and Phil does
his famous fill. Tne real thrill is seeing Collins just be
drummer at the height of his fame. I think it's another
example of him being a generous collaborator.

He did the same for Robert Plant, and took part in a great
album and tour.

In a weird coincidence, I have been on a big Genesis kick
in the last few weeks. And when I get on a Genesis kick, I
rarely start with the INVISIBLE TOUCH album, because it has
the song "Invisible Touch." But I found myself wanting to
hear the 2007 remix of "The Brazilian" as loud as possible
in the car, and it turned into an appreciation of "Tonight,
Tonight, Tonight" and "In the Glow of the Night/The Last
Domino." So I had been revisiting these songs and seeing
them in a new light when they announced the tour.

One of my favorite reactions to the tour came from an
unusual and unexpected place. Each Friday, journalist Amy
Walter takes over the NPR show THE TAKEAWAY for an hour of
pure political talk. Tanzina Vega is the show's regular
host, but she hands the show over each Friday to Walter,
and it's a great deep dive into politics. The show always
uses pop music (no vocals, just instrumental) that has
something to do with the topic as its interstitial
music/bumpers. This week's show exclusively featured
Genesis music. The show kicked off with "Behind the Lines"
(of course), which surprised me, and I immediately assumed
she or a producer were a fan and this was a little nod to
the reunion. Then they proceded to use JUST Genesis music
clips throughout - "Follow You, Follow Me," "Second Home by
the Sea," "Abacab," and a few Gabriel era cuts I couldn't
ID. Towards the end, they used "The Brazilian," so it all
came full circle for me.

Here's the one from '87, Craig.

I don't see Air Tonight listed but I do know they were doing it in '86
when he first started playing drums live with him. I've got a book at
home that has every show listed. I'll look and see what I find when I get
home later.

Tim, my favorite Plant tune is In The Mood. Collins drummed and
produced. Love it.

This is so weird. I called up a buddy of mine that was with me for that gig and we can both recall ITAT being played. I didn't see EC in '86 so I'm not confusing it with that show (and I haven't seen a Phil solo show so I couldn't have confused it with that). Bizarre!

I've got a big CD collection and have recently been burning compilation discs of my favourite artists. The Collins era Genesis runs over three discs but doesn't contain the song, Invisible Touch. I didn't mind it at first but the pure poppiness of it does not do a lot for me these days.

Here in the UK, the band gained a ton of new fans with the Invisible Touch album (but lost a few of the older ones). Just for fun, here are my favourite cuts from the Collin's era albums.

A Trick of the Tail - (Ripples)
Wind & Wuthering (Blood on the Rooftops)
And then there were Three (Follow you, Follow Me)
Duke (Duchess)
Abacab (Me and Sarah Jane)
Genesis (Mama)
Invisible Touch (Domino)
We Can't Dance (No Son of Mine)

and least favourite tracks, over the years:
Who Dunnit? (Isn't it everyone's least favourite!?)
Jesus he knows Me
Illegal Alien

Actually heard In Too Deep earlier today, and was surprised. Haven't heard it in a while.

And Craig, Illegal Alien is my least favorite, not Who Dunnit? But the fact I've not heard the latter in well over a decade and a half helps.
