It's a well known fact that (unlikely as it may seem) back in the 1960's there was talk of The Beatles starring in a Lord of the Rings film. This inspired me to have some photoshop fun.

I have heard various version of who they would have played in the film. Lennon might have played Gandalf for example. It made more sense to me though to cast the four Beatles as the four Hobbits in my image.

So does anyone else have any suggestions of which other 1960's era actors or pop stars could have been cast as the remaining members of the Fellowship?

Didn`t `Help` revolve(no pun intended!) around a magical cursed ring?

Cute photoshop work, Andrew. Everything I've read suggested that George
would play Gandalf, Paul would play Frodo, Ringo would play Sam, and John
would play Gollum.

I've also never seen any indication that they pursued the idea with any
degree of seriousness. However, the Salkinds did initially develop what
would become "The Three/Four Musketeers" with the thought that the
Beatles could play the titular characters -- Paul as D'Artagnan, John as
Athos, George as Aramis, and Ringo as Porthos. Obviously that didn't fly,
and it took them over five years to actually develop the films into what they
became.

It only occured to me as I was thinking of a title for the thread that Ringo, being famous for his rings was a somewhat obvious (though bad) choice to play the Ringbearer Frodo. (He is cast as Sam in my picture.)

I suppose I should have opened this in the Movies section though. Not sure if of of the mods can move it?

Would Maureen Starkey have played Arwen? Would Jane Asher have been Galadriel? Who would have been Strider - Pete Best? Jimmy Nicol? Would the Monty Python team have had cameos as the guys in the Prancing Pony? Would Neil Aspinall and Mal Evans have had argued about who'd play Gollum? What a weirdly enjoyable thing to think about. Thanks, Andrew!

edited to add - I can definitely see Brian Jones as (a very stoned) Elf Lord of some kind.

Or Michael Palin as Elrond, and Terry Jones as Gimli!

Chapman as Gandalf, Idle as Boromir...

Or for that matter, Peter Cook as Gandalf, Chapman as Boromir, and Marty
Feldman as Gollum.

Yes, indeed! Tony Hancock as the voice of Sauron, and Mick Jagger as Faramir! Perhaps Mick Fleetwood might have been a good choice for Saruman? Marrianne Faithful would have been great as an Elf, too.

Marty Feldman as Gollum is an excellent choice, John. I think Dudley Moore would have made a great Bilbo Baggins, and Frankie Howerd could have been Theoden.

Ooooh -- and Leo McKern as Denethor, Roy Kinnear as Tom Bombadil,
Eleanor Bron as Arwen and Jane Asher as Eowyn...

Bravo! I think we've covered the major characters! Now all we need to do is find a role for Sid James, and perhaps some bit parts for Kenneth Williams and Charles Hawtrey? I wonder if Robert Stigwood would be interested in being a producer.....?
