I was reading some old comics from the mid seventies and saw many adverts for sea monkeys. Of course the shrimp that hatch out of the eggs don't resemble the amphibian monkeys in the comic adverts. I have never kept the sea monkey as a 'pet'. Do any other posters have any stories to tell about ordering off for sea monkeys in comic adverts?

Y'know, the Roger Stern/Bruce Timm Avengers 1 1/2 retro-issue from 1999 has some hilarious versions of classic ads, including the famous Charles Atlas "Hero of the Beach" ad and...Sea Monkeys (with a disclaimer that they don't look like they do in the ad, and a statement that they're fun to smash!)!

That parody ad was taken from an old issue of CRAZY, I think it was written by Larry Hama or Christopher Priest.

I'm an animal rights vegetarian myself and could never smash a sea monkey.

I have a Sea Monkey ad desktop pattern as we speak. My
parents never let me get them when I was a kid, though... no
animals in the house rule.

That original ad was drawn by Joe Orlando.

I ordered them when I was a kid. Nothing ever happened in the fish bowl
I used for their eventual play habitat. Dumped the whole thing down the
toilet.

"Sea Monkeys" are called Brine Shrimp. It's a shrimp that manages to lay eggs in a Suspended Animation cyst state like, in which it can last years.
Once put in water, it will eclode, and it will live in saltwater.
They are cultivated as live food of Reef Tanks, but also used to feed hatchlings of freshwater fish that were just born and thus can't still eat proper fish food.

I've gotten Sea Monkeys a few times. They were sort of neat. They're definitely an easy pet to take care of, and they have an interesting life cycle.
My wife cites Sea Monkeys as the point in her life where she realized that marketing is full of lies.

My fave weird add ever was an informercial... don't konw which one... but it was this guy that preached the benefits of eating Sea Weed.
The whole thing was hilarious to the point of rolling on the floor and laughing, as he did a Larry King Live type fake interview to sermon on the benefits of Sea Weed.
At one point he spits out some of the best one liner marketting weirderies i've ever heard:
"I'm a pretty normal average person, i have a job, i'm happy, i exercice, i go for a walk, i eat Sea Weed."
Something in the likes of that.

I remember that "Sea Baboons" ad parody. I recall some quotes:
"Tired of stomping on bugs? Want something that REALLY fun to kill?"
"They're soft, squishy plasma, perfect for sqashing!"
"They're ugly and stupid, and look nothing like the picture on the right."
