Looking through some Spider-Girl the other day and noticed remarkable similarities between certain panels done by Ron Frenz and those done by Ross Andru in ASM and Giant-Sized in the early 70's.

When does a homage to one of the better Spider-Man artists (Andru) become a blatent rip-off of his work..?

When the "homages" begin to outnumber the
non-"homages" work.

But apart from the various covers of yours that are obvious homages to FF#1 etc would you ordinarily do the same with individual panels within a book..?

Luca, which are the homage panels? I have never noticed them... And I'm currently re-reading the complete run by Andru!
The only homage I have recognized appeared in an issue around #80: Spider-Girl jumps from a building with her classic costume... And Ron Frenz gives a tribute to the last page of AMAZING #252.

Ron Frenz's art in many places apes the classic Andru perspective shots of Spider-Man head to camera and feet away as well as the distinctively Andru one leg bent web-swinging shots. However on more than one occasion entire panels including the position and placement of goons is too similar to Andru's work to be a coincidence.

I will attempt to scan some examples and post them ASAP.

During Ron Frenz's original run on Amazing, he also paid homage to numerous Ditko and Romita panels.

For example, the cover of ASM # 257 (the Puma attacking Spidey) is based on a panel from Ditko's ASM # 34 (Spidey vs. Kraven).

I like Ron Frenz's artwork, but he's always aping somebody else's style (Buscema/Kirby on "Thor," for instance). I know he can draw. I would like to see the "real" Ron Frenz.

I think a lot of those might just be good Spider-Man poses rather than
deliberate homages, though some might be.

I like Ron frenz's SPIDER-GIRL work.  I'd be disappointed to learn if a large number of his panels have been "copied" from older books.
