Wow!  Thanks, Matt.

Sorry to hear about the accident.  I had always enjoyed the books he worked on. I've been rereading some old issues and had wondered why he was not longer active.

OMG. I had never heard that. I've never read much of his work and did not
know that anything had happened to him. I feel mortified and sick about an
off handed comment I made recently about his time on Alpha Flight.

This is terrible news, and I hope that fans are letting him and his family
know that he is missed and still appreciated.

I was a big fan of Micronauts in particular.  And from the many comments here and elsewhere, it seems I owe it to myself to check out ROM sometime.  Glad to hear this book is in the works.

A particular favorite was an issue of the Champions Bill Mantlo wrote guest-starring Black Goliath, Hawkeye and the Two-Gun Kid.  He also did an issue of Marvel Team-Up with the Spider-Man and the Hulk and the X-Men, continuing from the Marvel Team-Up Annual with the X-Men.  He worked with a real nice artist on those issues whose work I hadn't seen much of at the time.  Made quite an impression on me.

Another favorite was the three (?) issues of Marvel Spotlight with Steve Ditko doing Captain Universe -- a great concept that's gone off the tracks in other hands.

I believe he created Cloak and Dagger. (co-created?)

We should make a list of Mantlo characters. I'll need help!

I think I'm the only fan on earth that feels that Cloak and Dagger was a grossly underrated concept. I've always loved Cloak's look.

I thought that they were the perfect example of reoccuring sometimes supporting, sometimes adversarial charachters. Their own series was just not needed though.

He worked on almost every Marvel comic during his time there. A really underrated writer, no matter what anyone says.

I agree with Matt. After Hulk #272 we got the Intelligent Hulk (Bruce Banner retaining his intelligence and personality while green) and then the completely mindless Hulk at the Crossroads Of All Realities. In both cases this was a greater removal of the character from his "core" than any Hulk story Peter David ever wrote.

The funny thing is that I still remember the supporting characters from the Intelligent Hulk days (Bereet, Katherine Waynesboro), and sometimes wonder why no subsequent Hulk writer has used either of them since Mantlo left the title.

I tend to agree. Maybe like how the Phantom Stranger shows up?

I also thought the Punisher should work along those lines.

I collect back issues by year, to fill in the years of my lost collection.  I've been working on 1980.  Today I received the rest of the Hulks for 1980 (with the exception of my favorite, 250 -- still hunting for a bargain on this one).

Mantlo wrote some good Hulks in 1980.  It was one his best Hulk years.
