As teenagers, my friends and I always took delight in reading the sound
effects out loud in comics. There were certain sound effects that we
absolutely loved for their onomatopoetic qualities. (To this say, one of
these friends and I still say "UN-huh!" or "ARG-Huh-huh" as a reaction to
fake punches being thrown in our directions -- because he refused to
pronounce "Unh!" as a grunt, but, rather, preferred sounding it out.)
As we got older, the sound effects got even better -- especially in the
early '80s Marvel titles.
So. My favorite sound effect ever -- edging out "Kresssshhh!" for the
sound of glass breaking as Daredevil jumped through a window in one of
Frank Miller's early DD issues:
Walt Simonson's Thor (don't know the issue number, it was during the
original Beta Ray Bill saga) -- the sound of Thor's lightning and
thunderbolt -- "krackata-THOOM!"
What's yours?

I think that Walt and his letterer John Workman's work on THOR was the
best use of SFX in comics ever. However, I think it was the sound of
Surtur forging the Twilight Sword that had the most effect of any sound in
comics because it not only made a great indicator of the kind of sound
made, but also of what was in the air and what was on the way...

I've got a soft spot for this particular scream: "YEEEAAARGH!"
Always enjoyed the military standards, too: "RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT-TAT!" and "BUDDABUDDABUDDA!"
I believe I may have seen this one in an old Claremont/Byrne UNCANNY: "WUNGH!" Think it was a groan, maybe from Colossus, when Blob or someone tagged him during "Days of Future Past."

Just remembered an old fave, though I might be off. Comes from the same school as "Yeaaarghh!" and hails from an old issue of MICRONAUTS where Baron Karza shoots off his fist and strangles someone with it. Michael Golden drew it nice and gory, with blood actually gurgling out of the guy's mouth, and the sound from the guy's scream was something like this:
"Gleeeaaargghh!
Though it might've been...
"Gleeeaaark!"
I think I'm in the ballpark at least.

In Legends, when fighting with the metal warhounds, Captain Marvel hits
it with a "SPLANG" and Green Lantern, with his power ring, a beam that
goes "SKRAKT"

JLA # 188: A villain called Proteus has imprisoned several JLAers in the bodies of 'average' people, and disguised his gang as the affected heroes.
The JLAers catch up to the gang, and Wonder Woman, in the guise of a frumpy waitress(!), punches out the crook posing as Superman, who finishes saying something about them being 'discovered', only to be rendered unconscious, giving off a grunt with the odd spelling: 'GUNYNNH!'...which I, reading the book at age 6, pronounced, perhaps as John Mietus' buddy would 'Gun-Yun-Ih!'

To Dave F: Yes, that's a Freedom Force mesh for which I did the skin. I couldn't do the preview pic without that sound effect.
