This article at ScienceFiction.com takes a stab at naming the 20 greatest Avengers covers and does a fairly good job.
Included are six by George Perez, three each by John Buscema and JB and two by Jack Kirby.
Overall I'd say they did a pretty good job, although they did cheat a bit by including an issue of the Fantastic Four and the Death of Captain Marvel graphic novel.
It's hard to argue with their #1 choice. I may have gone with Avengers #28 (first appearance of Goliath by Kirby), Avengers #89 ("The Only Good Alien is a Dead Alien" by Sal Buscema) Avengers #97 (Golden Age heroes summoned by Rick Jones by Gil Kane) or Avengers #144 (first Hellcat by Kane).

No Avengers #4...the list fails. Also, while I love JB and his run on Avengers West Coast...I don't see how his Master Pandemonium cover is 'iconic'.

Some of the reasons behind the cover choices seem to be more about the interior story and less about the design of the covers.
I agree with a few on the list.

I wouldn't include the Cheung and Adams covers - they're you basic stand-and-pose group shot that we see so much of nowadays.
If they were going for iconic (as they claim) Avengers #4 should be there. It's not my favorite visually, but it certainly is significant (and the subject of several homages over the years).
And I think the best of JB's West Coast Covers are #44 (the reassembled Vision being held back by Hawkeye and Wonder Man), and his FF #1 and Avengers #57 homages.

It's hard to pick 20. There are A LOT of great Avengers covers. I'd make a case for issues 63's Goliath cover, 78's Man-Ape cover, 189's Hawkeye cover by JB, and of course issue 4. I don't think it's a bad list but there's just so many great covers.

That list should only include actual Avengers covers. Anyway, this is one of my favorites:
