Hi John! I understand that when you created Alpha Flight that you did so without the intention of them getting their own book and when they did you had to then work on the back stories of the characters. You've mentioned that, because of this, you really didn't have a connection to the characters as you did with many of the other Marvel characters you worked on. In re-reading Alpha Flight #1 and seeing the brief introduction of Beta and Gamma Flight (not counting Puck and Marrina) did you do the same with them, simply creating some quick characters without the intention of them getting a bigger time in the spotlight (which quickly came up less than a year after AF #1) or did you have backgrounds on them before AF #1?

I “met” Beta and Gamma flights (excluding Puck and Marinna) for the first time when I drew those two panels!

Wow! That is crazy fun! I remember the first time I read this when it came out and I was so excited, not only to see Alpha Flight in their own comic, but these other unknown characters! Who were they? What could they do? Visually Box was my favorite of the newbies.

I’m going thru a read of Alpha Flight right now. I’m thru JB’s time on the book and am about 20 issues thru Mantlo’s run. He tries too hard undoing everything JB established.
I’ve read other work by Mantlo and enjoyed it, but this series reads like it was written by someone else. It’s really bad.

I always just pretend that Alpha Flight #28 was the last issue because it was definitely the last issue that any of the character were written correctly.

Well, I’ve had the Jim Lee issues for forever, so I decided to fill in the gap. At least I’ve had his run to look forward to, I guess. My next issue to read is his first. Mantlo has totally decimated the team. Northstar and Aurora are elves and gone, Bochs is dead, Snowbird is dead, Talisman and Shaman are both gone, Puck is tall and gone. The only ones left are Vindicator, whip now is a born leader and why wasn’t she AF’s leader all along, Jeffries who is Box now and is a strange melding of Plastic Man and a Transformer, and lady Sasquatch/ Langkowski. Oh, and the Purple Man’s daughter. It’s like he did everything he could to make it NOT the same team.

Sorry if this has been asked and answered before, but it has only occurred to me now looking at Box's face in that panel -- was he inspired by the robot Box from Logan's Run?

So JB, as that was the first time you were 'meeting' Flashback, did you have any idea he was just one person rather than the two as he appeared there?
